NEWPORT, Wales, October 20, 2026 â Three schoolchildren were taken to hospital after a double-decker bus struck a railway bridge in Newport on Tuesday morning, ripping off much of its roof and causing widespread rail disruption during rush hour.
Gwent Police said the crash happened at approximately 7:45 a.m. on Tregare Street. The bus was taking pupils to Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed, a Welsh-medium secondary school on Duffryn Way.
Police confirmed the children’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. The collision left the upper deck severely damaged, with shattered windows, twisted metal and sections of the roof scattered across the road.
School Bus Roof Torn Off in Newport Bridge Crash
The bus struck a railway bridge at Maindee West, between Newport and Cwmbran, according to Transport for Wales.
Images from the scene showed the upper roof detached and the rear section of the double-decker bent backwards. Some pupils had been sitting upstairs when the collision occurred.
There was no obvious visible damage to the railway bridge, although authorities had not confirmed whether a structural inspection was required.
Emergency workers secured the area while recovery teams removed the torn-off roof before clearing the bus. The vehicle was removed by midday, and Tregare Street subsequently reopened.
Mother Describes Son’s Terrifying Moments
Jo Townsend, from Maindy, Newport, said her 13-year-old son Gruff was sitting toward the rear of the upper deck when the bus hit the bridge.
Townsend told BBC Wales that her son was struck on the head by a pole and suffered scratches and bumps to his back.
She described rushing to the scene after learning about the crash, fearing for his safety.
Gruff reportedly recalled the bus suddenly becoming dark, followed by flickering lights, screaming and the sound of metal scraping against metal.
His mother said he was shocked but fortunate to have escaped more serious injuries.

Three Children Hospitalised as Emergency Services Respond
Gwent Police, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Welsh Ambulance Service attended the collision.
Three pupils were taken to hospital for treatment. Authorities had not confirmed the total number of children travelling on the bus or reported additional serious injuries.
Townsend said nearby Lullabyz nursery moved its children elsewhere, allowing paramedics to use the premises while treating those affected.
Newport City Council said it was cooperating with emergency services and prioritising the wellbeing of everyone involved.
Newport Train Delays and Cancellations After Bridge Strike
The collision disrupted railway services through Newport during Tuesday’s morning commute.
Transport for Wales reported delays and cancellations between Newport and Hereford, affecting passengers travelling through Abergavenny.
Services operated by Great Western Railway and CrossCountry were also affected, with some journeys cancelled, delayed or revised.
Passengers can check National Rail’s official journey updates for current train information and disruption notices.
Travellers whose services were cancelled or significantly delayed may qualify for refunds or compensation, depending on their operator’s rules.
Bridge Clearance Raises School Transport Safety Questions
The crash has raised questions about how a double-decker school bus came to strike a railway bridge on its morning route.
Double-decker vehicles require greater overhead clearance than standard buses, making accurate route planning and bridge-height awareness important safety considerations.
However, police have not publicly confirmed the cause of Tuesday’s collision. There is no verified finding involving speeding, mechanical failure or driver error.
A separate Bee Network bus bridge crash case in Salford previously highlighted the dangers associated with low bridges.
School transport safety has also received attention following the unrelated Winter Haven school bus crash in Florida, where two people died.
Latest Update on Newport School Bus Crash

The damaged bus had been removed, Tregare Street had reopened, and emergency recovery work at the scene had ended.
Authorities had not confirmed the driver’s condition, the number of passengers aboard or whether any arrests had been made.
Further information from police and transport authorities will be needed to establish the circumstances of the collision and any potential implications for the school bus route.
