South Africa Shark Attack: Woman, 65, Killed While Swimming, Two Beaches Closed

KUGOMPO CITY, South Africa, October 20, 2026 — A 65-year-old woman has died after a shark attack while swimming at Orient Beach in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, forcing authorities to close two beaches and issue urgent safety warnings along the coastline.

The woman was reportedly swimming with a group on Tuesday morning when the shark struck. Despite emergency efforts to save her, she died from her injuries.

Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality confirmed the fatal incident and announced that Orient Beach and Eastern Beach would remain closed until further notice. The restrictions affect local swimmers, tourists and other people planning to enter the water.

Woman Attacked During Morning Swim at Orient Beach

According to local reports, the attack occurred at approximately 8:07 a.m. South African time on October 20.

The 65-year-old woman was reportedly swimming alongside other beachgoers when she sustained serious injuries to her right arm and leg.

PE Express, citing ZigZag Magazine, reported that the woman was part of a group of open-water swimmers and was brought ashore by lifeguards.

Paramedics and people at the scene attempted emergency treatment, but the woman could not be saved.

Authorities have not confirmed how far offshore the attack occurred or identified the shark species involved.

Orient Beach and Eastern Beach Closed Until Further Notice

Following the fatal incident, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality ordered the immediate closure of Orient Beach and nearby Eastern Beach.

Officials warned residents and visitors against entering the water at either location while emergency authorities handled the incident.

Additional warnings were issued at other beaches, although no further closures were identified in the initial municipal announcement.

Both affected beaches will remain closed until authorities determine that swimming can safely resume. No reopening date has been announced.

Visitors should follow updates from Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality and obey instructions from lifeguards and emergency personnel.

Police Open Inquest Into Woman’s Death

South African Police Service officers reportedly opened an inquest docket following the fatal attack.

The woman’s body was transferred to State Forensic Pathology Services, according to local reporting.

Her identity had not been publicly released in the initial reports, pending notification of her family.

Investigators have not publicly established the shark’s species or the precise circumstances immediately before the attack.

Previous Shark Encounter Recorded Near Orient Beach

The October 20 tragedy follows an earlier documented shark encounter near Orient Beach.

According to the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board’s 2023–24 annual report, a paddle skier encountered a shark approximately 500 metres offshore on April 15, 2023.

The shark bit the paddle ski, but the person escaped without injury. Investigators assessed the bite pattern as consistent with a white shark.

That historical incident does not establish which species was responsible for Tuesday’s fatal attack.

South Africa’s History of Fatal Shark Attacks

In September 2022, a woman believed to be 39 years old died following a shark attack near Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape.

Following that incident, the National Sea Rescue Institute warned about unusual shark activity along parts of South Africa’s southern coastline.

Shark attacks have also prompted emergency closures overseas. In September 2026, swimmer Greg O’Neill was killed in a shark attack at Sorrento Beach in Perth, Australia.

Western Australian authorities subsequently issued a rare catch-and-kill order targeting the shark believed responsible.

These incidents occurred in different locations, and there is no evidence connecting them to the latest South African attack.

Safety Warnings for Swimmers and Beach Visitors

Residents and tourists have been urged to stay out of the water at Orient Beach and Eastern Beach until the restrictions are officially lifted.

People visiting other beaches around KuGompo City should check municipal safety notices, use supervised swimming areas and follow lifeguard instructions.

Open-water swimmers should avoid entering the sea when warnings are active and ensure their groups have emergency communication arrangements.

The closures are precautionary measures and do not establish that sharks have been sighted at every affected beach.

Latest Update on the Fatal Shark Attack

As of the October 20 reports, Orient Beach and Eastern Beach remained closed until further notice.

The victim’s identity, the shark species and the reopening schedule had not been publicly confirmed.

Further information is expected from police and municipal authorities as the investigation continues. Beachgoers should follow official notices before returning to the water.
