Construction of the new McDonald's restaurant in Awapuni, Palmerston North, expected to create 90 jobs in New Zealand.

Palmerston North to Get Fourth McDonald’s, Creating 90 New Jobs

Palmerston North is preparing to welcome its fourth McDonald’s restaurant, with construction underway on a new outlet in Awapuni after the project received resource consent earlier this year. The restaurant is expected to create around 90 full-time and part-time jobs, but its arrival has also triggered a lively debate over health, convenience and whether the city really needs another fast-food outlet.

The new restaurant will be the first McDonald’s to open in Palmerston North in more than 15 years. McDonald’s New Zealand says the investment reflects the city’s population growth and changing travel patterns, while supporters believe it will bring jobs and economic activity to a growing suburb.

New Restaurant Approved After Limited Opposition

The Awapuni development received resource consent in February after the public consultation process attracted only three opposing submissions, with nearby residents mainly raising concerns about potential noise.

An earlier proposal would have allowed the restaurant to operate 24 hours a day, but those plans were revised. The new McDonald’s will instead open seven days a week from 6:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.

The site had originally been earmarked for a shopping centre before McDonald’s moved forward with its plans. During the consent hearing, planners were told the restaurant is expected to create approximately 90 jobs across full-time and part-time positions.

Social Media Debate Divides Opinion

The project quickly became a talking point on social media, with residents divided over whether Palmerston North needs a fourth McDonald’s.

Some argued another restaurant would simply add to the city’s already large fast-food presence and make unhealthy eating more convenient. Others welcomed the additional choice, particularly for people living in western Palmerston North, and pointed to the employment opportunities the restaurant will provide.

The discussion has highlighted a broader debate taking place in many growing communities: how to balance economic development with improving access to healthier food choices.

Health Experts Want More Healthy Food Options

Nutritionist and author Claire Turnbull said she believes communities would benefit more from greater access to healthier food rather than additional fast-food restaurants.

According to Turnbull, food environments strongly influence everyday eating habits. When inexpensive, quick and convenient meals become easier to access, people are naturally more likely to choose them, particularly busy families and workers.

However, she stressed the issue extends well beyond McDonald’s, saying every fast-food chain contributes to the challenge of making healthier choices. She encouraged consumers to “talk with your money” by supporting businesses offering healthier alternatives whenever possible.

Supporters Point to Jobs and Local Growth

Palmerston North City councillor Leonie Hapeta strongly supports the project, saying Awapuni has long needed additional retail development.

She said the suburb would benefit not only from another McDonald’s but also from more shopping options, including another supermarket. Hapeta dismissed criticism from opponents, saying the new restaurant is exactly the kind of investment that should be happening in that part of the city.

She also believes the nearby racecourse and surrounding businesses could benefit from increased visitor traffic, helping stimulate further economic activity in Awapuni.

Students Welcome Another Meeting Place

Massey University Students’ Association General President Takunda Mabonga welcomed the new restaurant, saying students would appreciate another comfortable place to meet friends, study and socialize.

He highlighted practical benefits such as free Wi-Fi and accessible seating, describing the restaurant as another gathering place for students beyond the university campus.

How Palmerston North Compares With Similar Cities

The debate has also focused on whether Palmerston North has an unusually high number of McDonald’s restaurants compared with other New Zealand cities.

An RNZ comparison found that New Plymouth and Hastings each have one McDonald’s restaurant, while nearby Napier and Havelock North also have restaurants serving their communities. Tauranga, despite having a larger population than Palmerston North, currently has three McDonald’s locations.

Within Palmerston North itself, the existing restaurants on Fergusson Street, Rangitikei Street and inside Plaza Mall are all located within roughly one kilometre of each other. The new Awapuni restaurant will sit around a 10-minute drive from those locations, providing easier access for residents on the western side of the city.

The city also has a strong fast-food market, including four Subway stores, three Domino’s Pizza outlets, two Burger King restaurants, two Pizza Hut restaurants and two KFC outlets.

McDonald’s Says Expansion Reflects Regional Growth

A McDonald’s New Zealand spokesperson said the Awapuni restaurant reflects how Palmerston North has changed since the last restaurant opened more than 15 years ago.

The company said the new outlet forms part of a nationwide expansion programme involving investments worth tens of millions of dollars, with several new restaurants opening across New Zealand this year and creating hundreds of new jobs.

McDonald’s recently celebrated 50 years of operating in New Zealand. The company’s first Palmerston North restaurant opened in 1994, and franchisees say they remain committed to supporting the communities where they operate.

The investment also comes as New Zealand continues to focus on wider regional development and household affordability initiatives. For example, the National Home Energy Fund solar loan scheme highlights how both public and private investment are helping shape communities across the country.
