The violence unfolded in Trappes and neighbouring La VerriĂšre, in the Yvelines department west of the French capital. The suspected attacker, reportedly a 39-year-old man, was subsequently detained in CoigniĂšres.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said three areas were affected and that the gunman appeared to have used an automatic weapon. Investigators are examining whether the victims were deliberately targeted, including the possibility of a racial or terrorist motive.
Gunman Opens Fire Across Three Locations Near Paris
The shootings began on Friday morning, with reports placing the initial gunfire at approximately 10:30 a.m. local time.
According to French media, the suspect fired bursts of gunfire from a vehicle in Trappes before further shots were reported in La VerriĂšre, approximately a 10-minute drive away.
Police and emergency responders attended several locations, including a petrol station, where officers were photographed examining evidence.
Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh told French broadcaster BFMTV that the attacker appeared to fire indiscriminately at people he encountered.
The mayor described the violence as an apparent attempt to cause mass casualties. He also said the suspected gunman lived in a nearby town.
Authorities have not yet publicly established the precise sequence of events at all three locations.
12-Year-Old Girl Among Four Injured in Shooting
One person was killed and at least four others were injured, including a 12-year-old girl, according to the initial official casualty figures.
Spanish newspaper El PaĂs reported that the girl suffered eight gunshot wounds before her condition was stabilised. The details of her injuries have not been independently confirmed in the initial official statements.
Two men, aged 29 and 49, were also reportedly injured in La VerriĂšre and transported to hospitals in the Paris region.
Reports indicated that the person killed was of African origin, while another injured victim was of North African origin. Investigators are examining whether the victims’ backgrounds played a role in the attack.
Some French media suggested the number of injured people could be higher, although authorities initially confirmed four injuries.
39-Year-Old Suspect Arrested in CoigniĂšres
Police arrested the suspected attacker in CoigniĂšres following the shootings in Trappes and La VerriĂšre.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu confirmed that the individual had been apprehended and placed in police custody.
The suspect was widely reported to be 39 years old, although some early accounts gave his age as 38.
Interior Minister Nuñez said the gunman appeared to have used an automatic firearm. Investigators are working to establish the exact weapon used, how it was obtained and whether the shootings were planned.

French Anti-Terror Prosecutors Investigate Possible Motive
France’s National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office, known as PNAT, has taken charge of the investigation.
The inquiry includes suspected murder and attempted murder linked to a terrorist enterprise, possession of a Category A firearm and conspiracy involving the preparation of terrorist crimes.
Investigators are also examining whether the victims were targeted because of their actual or perceived race, ethnicity, nationality or religion.
However, authorities have not established a terrorist or racist motive. The involvement of anti-terrorism prosecutors means those possibilities are being investigated, not that they have been proven.
The Associated Press reported on the investigation following the shootings in the western Paris suburbs.
French Government Responds as Investigation Continues
Prime Minister Lecornu described the shootings as extremely serious and said security forces and judicial authorities were fully mobilised.
Interior Minister Nuñez confirmed that three areas were affected and that the attacker appeared to have fired at five people.
The incident has raised public-safety concerns because the gunfire occurred in everyday public spaces, including areas used by pedestrians and motorists.
Similar concerns have followed other shootings in commercial areas, including the West Baltimore gas station shooting, where multiple people were killed or injured.
Questions Remain Over Targeting and Weapon Used
Investigators must now establish whether the victims were selected deliberately, whether the suspect acted alone and what circumstances led to the shootings.
The origin of the firearm and the suspect’s movements between the affected locations are also expected to form important parts of the inquiry.
The response comes amid wider concerns about armed violence and emergency policing, also highlighted by the deadly Dallas highway standoff, although the two incidents are unrelated.
For residents of Trappes and La VerriĂšre, the immediate priorities remain the treatment of those injured, support for the victims’ families and clarification of the circumstances surrounding Friday’s attack.
Latest reported status: One person confirmed dead, at least four injured and one suspect in police custody. French authorities are continuing their anti-terrorism investigation, with the motive still undetermined.
