Jamie Bell has been officially cast as Duke “Erasmus” Shelby, the son of Tommy Shelby, marking a major turning point for the iconic crime saga. The upcoming spin-off series doesn’t just continue the story—it reshapes it, shifting focus to a new generation navigating the brutal realities of 1950s Birmingham.
A decade later, a more dangerous Shelby rises
Set roughly ten years after the events of the recently released film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, the series moves into early post-World War II Britain—a time of rebuilding, but also rising tension and opportunity.
At the heart of this new era is Duke Shelby. Now older, more calculated, and significantly more dangerous, he takes control of the family’s criminal empire in a city described as both full of opportunity and “blood-soaked” conflict. Birmingham itself becomes a key character, reflecting a society caught between recovery and chaos.
Creator Steven Knight confirmed the shift, calling it a “new era of Peaky Blinders,” with the narrative exploring how power, ambition, and violence evolve in a post-war landscape.
The spin-off also brings in a strong ensemble cast. Charlie Heaton joins as a central figure, alongside Jessica Brown Findlay, Lashana Lynch, and Lucy Karczewski, who makes her television debut. From BBC drama to global franchise
Since its debut in 2013, Peaky Blinders has grown into one of the most influential British television dramas, earning global recognition and winning the BAFTA for Best Drama Series in 2018.
The franchise has continued to expand beyond television. The recently released film The Immortal Man, directed by Tom Harper and starring Cillian Murphy, quickly climbed to the number one spot globally on Netflix, holding that position for two consecutive weeks. Its success has reinforced the franchise’s enduring popularity and paved the way for this new chapter.
The upcoming series has already been commissioned for two seasons, each consisting of six hour-long episodes. It will premiere on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK, with Netflix handling international distribution.
Production is taking place in and around Birmingham, including Digbeth Loc. Studios, with backing from the West Midlands Combined Authority. The project is also the first major commission under a new partnership aimed at boosting regional production investment in the UK.
