Red Lobster’s Oldest Florida Location Is Closing Forever After 56 Years

One of Florida’s most recognizable Red Lobster restaurants is officially shutting down after more than five decades in business, ending a chapter that many Tallahassee residents thought would survive the chain’s recent financial crisis.

The Red Lobster restaurant located on North Monroe Street in Tallahassee will permanently close on May 24, according to employees and local reports. The seafood location first opened in October 1970 and is widely recognized as the chain’s oldest continuously operating restaurant in Florida.

The closure has sparked strong reactions online because the Tallahassee location managed to survive Red Lobster’s dramatic bankruptcy restructuring in 2024, when the company closed more than 120 restaurants across the United States, including 17 in Florida.

For many locals, the restaurant was more than a seafood chain. Families celebrated birthdays there, students gathered after football weekends and longtime residents treated it as a Tallahassee landmark. Social media quickly filled with comments from customers calling the news “sad” and sharing memories built around the restaurant’s famous Cheddar Bay Biscuits and seafood platters.

How Red Lobster Reached This Point

Red Lobster has faced years of financial pressure tied to rising costs, debt and declining customer traffic. The company officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2024 after reporting major losses and shutting locations nationwide.

The chain later exited bankruptcy in September 2024 with support from Fortress Investment Group and a reported $60 million investment aimed at stabilizing operations and improving the remaining restaurants. At the time, the Tallahassee location even received renewed attention with updated menus focused on “wild-caught” seafood and fresh operational changes.

The restaurant’s general manager had previously encouraged customers to give the location another chance after bankruptcy concerns created uncertainty around the brand.

Despite those efforts, Red Lobster has continued reducing expenses. Reports over the past year showed the company cutting restaurant-level jobs, reducing parts of its corporate workforce and reviewing leases across the country as part of its long-term recovery plan.

According to the Tallahassee Democrat, Red Lobster CEO Damola Adamolekun previously acknowledged the company was reviewing restaurant performance and lease agreements, leaving open the possibility of additional closures.

A Restaurant That Became Part of Tallahassee History

The Tallahassee restaurant carried decades of history inside its kitchen. Former grillmaster Horace Williams worked at the location for more than 45 years after joining as a teenager. In past interviews, he described preparing hundreds of meals a day and taking pride in making every seafood plate look presentable for customers.

Back when the restaurant opened in 1970, advertisements promoted “family-priced seafood,” with baked oysters, shrimp and crab dishes selling for less than $2. Steak and lobster dinners cost only a few dollars at the time.

Now, after 56 years, the restaurant’s final week has become a major talking point across Florida as customers make last visits before the doors close for good.
