The mother of Tucson-area teenager Ryker Lee has been found dead just two days after the 15-year-old was located safe, adding a tragic new development to a case that began as a missing-person search and quickly expanded into a child-abuse investigation.

Danielle Renae Lee-Sharp, 39, was discovered east of Mammoth, Arizona, at about 5 a.m. on Sept. 27. Authorities said her injuries appeared to be self-inflicted. An unidentified man found at the same location with similar apparent injuries survived and was taken to a Tucson hospital.
The man’s identity and condition were not immediately confirmed publicly. Authorities have also not released a final medical determination on Lee-Sharp’s death, making âapparent suicideâ the appropriate description while the investigation continues.
Ryker Lee Was Found Safe After Three-Day Search
Ryker, 15, was reported missing Sept. 22 from the family’s home in the Three Points area southwest of Tucson. Authorities said surveillance footage showed him leaving the property at about 10 a.m.
His disappearance caused added concern because Ryker has Type 1 diabetes and requires insulin. A community tip ultimately led deputies to him shortly before 1 p.m. on Sept. 25 near South Sierrita Mountain Road and West Ajo Highway, about three miles from his home.
Authorities said Ryker was safe and was placed in the custody of Arizona’s Department of Child Safety. His two younger siblings had already been taken into state custody.
Search Led Deputies to Child Abuse Allegations
While investigating Ryker’s disappearance, Pima County sheriff’s detectives said they uncovered evidence of possible child abuse involving all three children.
Lee-Sharp and Ryker’s stepfather, Michael Aaron Menzie, 43, were arrested on suspicion of three counts of child abuse each. The accusations remain allegations and had not resulted in findings of guilt.
An interim court complaint described conditions at the family’s property as unsuitable for children. Investigators alleged that Ryker had routinely been confined for hours inside a small, padlocked area of an RV outside the main residence.

Investigators Describe Conditions Inside RV
According to court-document reporting, Ryker’s sleeping area measured roughly 6 feet by 5 feet. The RV allegedly lacked running water, electricity, restroom facilities and air conditioning.
Investigators also reported finding spiders and webs near the sleeping area and bottles containing what appeared to be urine. Windows around the space were reportedly covered from outside.
Inside the main house, deputies described a strong odor of cat urine, insects, garbage and damaged flooring. The younger children were reportedly sleeping on plastic mattresses without bedding, while investigators also raised concerns about food in the refrigerator and an unsecured rifle in a bedroom closet.

Mother and Stepfather Were Released on Bond
Lee-Sharp’s bond was set at $5,000 while Menzie’s was set at $10,000, according to local reporting. Both later posted bond and were released while the case proceeded.
Lee-Sharp’s death came only days later and does not resolve the allegations involving the children. Authorities may now have to address several separate matters, including the circumstances of her death, the condition and identity of the injured man and the status of the child-abuse case.
The rapid sequence is similar to other developing public-safety stories where early information changes as investigations progress. Recent coverage of the Towson University-area shooting investigation also showed why confirmed official updates matter during fast-moving cases.
Several Questions Remain Unanswered
Authorities had not publicly identified the hospitalized man in the information available after the Mammoth incident. Claims circulating online about who he may be should therefore not be treated as confirmed.
Officials may also release additional information about Lee-Sharp’s official cause and manner of death following further investigation.
For Ryker and his siblings, the key confirmed development is that all three children are now under state supervision. Ryker was found alive and safe after three days missing, ending the most urgent part of a case that has since developed into a much broader investigation.
Another recent case involving a young person and an active investigation, the Westbury High School-area shooting in Houston, similarly underscores the importance of separating confirmed facts from claims that remain under investigation.
