If you were an early Starlink adopter, it may be worth checking your inbox. SpaceX has begun offering some customers a free hardware upgrade as support for its first-generation router winds down.
Starlink users who joined during the service’s early rollout — when the system shipped with the now-familiar round dish — may soon receive a complimentary replacement router. SpaceX says it is contacting customers still using the original “Gen 1” router to let them know that software updates for the device will be discontinued in the near future.
Rather than forcing customers to purchase new hardware, the company is offering a free replacement: the Starlink Router Mini. According to Starlink’s official Gen 1 Router Replacement support guidance , the move is designed to maintain security, reliability, and overall network performance as the service continues to evolve.

Starlink says the original router will continue to function for now, but without ongoing software updates, users may eventually encounter security risks or compatibility issues. Claiming the replacement is handled directly through the Starlink account experience. Eligible customers receive an email with a “Claim Free Router” option, complete a short confirmation step, and verify their shipping address. Installation note: The Router Mini requires its own power adapter and cannot draw power from the original Gen 1 setup. Users can reuse their existing Wi-Fi name and password to allow devices to reconnect automatically.
Customers who have not received an email are advised not to panic. Starlink’s support site remains the most reliable source for updates, and the company says it is contacting affected users directly as part of a phased rollout.
Beyond the free hardware, the move highlights how quickly consumer internet technology evolves. Even premium satellite internet systems eventually need hardware refreshes, and Starlink’s decision to replace early routers at no cost may be welcomed by long-time subscribers.
