Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has received its first software update in more than a year, bringing Nintendo’s platform fighter to Version 13.0.5. Released on September 1, 2026, the patch quickly attracted attention because major post-launch activity for the game has become rare.
The update is much smaller than its timing might suggest. Nintendo has not announced new fighters, stages or balance changes. Instead, Version 13.0.5 focuses on a specific online issue and carries an important warning for anyone keeping older battle replays.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 13.0.5 patch notes
According to Nintendo’s official Super Smash Bros. Ultimate update history, the patch fixes behavior that could occur when invalid data was sent or received during online battles.
Nintendo has not provided technical details about what caused the problem or how often it appeared. More importantly for competitive players, no fighter buffs, nerfs or other gameplay adjustments are listed in the release notes.
The distinction is significant because Nintendo has previously used numbered Smash updates for balance changes. Version 13.0.5 is better understood as a maintenance release rather than a new competitive patch.
Replay warning before installing the update
The most important practical detail may come before installation. Nintendo warns that replays created with Versions 9.0.0 through 13.0.4 may have compatibility problems, while replays from Version 8.1.0 and earlier are not compatible with the latest software.
Players who want to preserve an important match should convert it to video first through Vault → Replays → Replay Data → Convert to Video. Normal save data remains available after the update.
Version 13.0.5 is required to use the game’s internet features, and Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online play. Everyone playing together must also be using the same software version.
Nintendo’s approach to older Switch games varies considerably. The difference between a standard software update and a hardware-focused release was especially clear with the Animal Crossing 3.0 update and separate Switch 2 upgrade, which helps put the scope of this Smash patch into perspective.
Why this rare Smash Ultimate update matters
Version 13.0.5 stands out mainly because of the gap since the previous patch. Version 13.0.4 arrived on June 24, 2025 and fixed a problem that could prevent Mii Fighter thumbnail images from generating correctly when a fighter was created or modified.
Nintendo had also addressed a separate Mii Fighter-related online issue in June 2025 involving matches between Nintendo Switch 2 and original Switch players. The latest release therefore continues a pattern of targeted fixes rather than renewed content development.
That context makes the new patch notable without overstating what it delivers. A software update appearing after more than a year shows that Nintendo is still maintaining the title when specific technical problems need attention.
Version 13.0.5 is not a Switch 2 upgrade
Nothing in the published notes announces higher resolution, improved frame rate, graphical upgrades or new Nintendo Switch 2-specific features for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
The game can be played on Nintendo Switch 2, but this release should not be confused with a dedicated next-generation enhancement. For most players, the visible experience will remain familiar; the documented change is confined to the online fix.
Players with automatic software updates enabled may receive Version 13.0.5 automatically while connected to the internet. Anyone returning after a long break should simply check the installed version and preserve old replays before updating if those matches still matter.
