Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey opened with an estimated $264.1 million worldwide, giving the filmmaker his biggest global debut and the strongest live-action worldwide opening of 2026.
Universal’s mythological epic earned approximately $124.5 million in the United States and Canada and $139.6 million internationally, surpassing the $249 million global launch of The Dark Knight Rises.
The Odyssey box office breakdown
The movie debuted in 3,919 North American theaters, averaging nearly $31,800 per location. It delivered 2026’s biggest domestic opening for a live-action release and the largest debut for Matt Damon as a lead actor. Updated figures are available through The Numbers box office charts.
Overseas, The Odyssey played across 73 territories, approximately 12,700 locations and 25,600 screens. Its $139.6 million international total was Nolan’s best in comparable markets and the second-largest overseas opening for an R-rated film, behind Deadpool & Wolverine.
Universal achieved its best opening in 11 markets, while Nolan set personal records in 48 countries, including India, France, Italy, Spain, Brazil, the Netherlands and Poland.

The $264.1 million estimate exceeded the worldwide debuts of The Dark Knight Rises at $249 million, The Dark Knight at $198 million and Oppenheimer at $180 million.
Among all 2026 releases, it ranked third behind the animated films The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at $372.5 million and Toy Story 5 at $312 million.
Ticket prices, currency movements and release patterns make comparisons between different years imperfect. However, the result demonstrates the continuing appeal of event cinema. Smaller productions have found audiences too, with Obsession delivering a notable return from its reported $750,000 budget.
IMAX contributes $51.8 million
As the first feature filmed entirely with IMAX cameras, The Odyssey collected approximately $51.8 million from IMAX screenings. North America contributed $29.6 million, representing almost 24% of its domestic earnings, while international locations added $22.2 million.
Forty-one IMAX 70mm screens generated $6.3 million, averaging about $153,000 per screen. Twenty-six markets reported their biggest IMAX opening, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, Mexico and Argentina.
The performance highlights the value of premium formats for major releases. Supergirl also received a combined theatrical and IMAX release in June 2026, but Nolan’s production had the added distinction of being filmed entirely for IMAX presentation.
UK, France and India lead overseas results
The United Kingdom led the international markets with $17.4 million, followed by France at $13.7 million and Italy at $11.5 million. Australia earned $9.3 million, Germany $8.1 million and Mexico $7 million.
India contributed $7.2 million, marking Nolan’s biggest opening in the country and Universal’s largest three-day debut there. It also delivered the Indian market’s biggest IMAX opening for a Hollywood film.
Spain collected $5.2 million despite competition from the World Cup final. Argentina and Vietnam were the two notable territories where the film did not begin at No. 1, earning $1 million and $602,000 respectively.
Cast, audience response and upcoming releases
Matt Damon stars as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland and Charlize Theron. The film follows the Greek warrior’s dangerous journey home after the Trojan War.
An “A” CinemaScore from opening-weekend audiences is an encouraging early indicator, although weekday attendance, competition and repeat premium-format viewing will shape its longer theatrical run.
South Korea is scheduled to receive the film on August 5, followed by China on August 14 and Japan on September 11, giving the worldwide total further room to grow.
Opening-weekend numbers remain studio estimates and may change when final ticket sales are reported. Even with that qualification, The Odyssey has secured Nolan’s largest global launch to date.
