The Atlanta Hawks are trading four-time NBA All-Star Trae Young to the Washington Wizards in exchange for veteran guard CJ McCollum and wing shooter Corey Kispert, ending Young’s seven-plus-season run as the face of the Hawks franchise.
The move sends the 27-year-old star guard to what league sources described as his preferred destination in the nation’s capital, where Washington officials believe he can serve as the offensive engine of a rebuilding roster. The trade also reunites Young with Wizards executive Travis Schlenk, the architect who drafted him No. 5 overall in 2018.
Washington’s front office, led by Michael Winger and Will Dawkins, has spent the past year searching for a foundational star to anchor its young core. Young arrives with elite playmaking credentials and immediately reshapes a Wizards offense that has struggled to generate consistent guard scoring and ball movement.
For Atlanta, the trade represents a clean reset. The Hawks are positioned to shift toward a more wing-driven, fluid style built around emerging pieces such as Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels, Onyeka Okongwu, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and rookie Zaccharie Risacher, while adding veteran structure through McCollum.
McCollum enters the Hawks lineup as a plug-and-play leader on a $30.6 million expiring contract, giving Atlanta flexibility both on the floor and financially. Kispert, meanwhile, provides reliable perimeter shooting and depth, fitting neatly into a roster emphasizing spacing and ball movement.
Moving Young also enhances Atlanta’s financial maneuverability over the coming months, positioning the franchise to pursue additional high-salary targets should opportunities arise, while maintaining valuable draft optionality ahead of the June draft.
The groundwork for the move had been in place for months. The Hawks and Young’s representatives remained in dialogue after the organization elected not to offer a long-term extension, eventually landing on a deal that reshapes both franchises’ timelines.
Young has approximately $95 million remaining on his contract through the 2026–27 season, with a player option ahead. Washington is expected to evaluate his health before any long-term decisions after he dealt with a right MCL sprain earlier in the season and a recent right quad contusion.
On the court, Young leaves Atlanta as the franchise’s all-time leader in assists and three-pointers and as one of the most productive playmakers of his generation, including multiple seasons averaging at least 25 points and 10 assists. His arrival gives Washington a proven offensive centerpiece capable of altering defensive schemes and accelerating the rebuild.
Atlanta, meanwhile, closes one of the most significant chapters in its modern history, opting for flexibility, depth and stylistic evolution over ball dominance. Washington’s bet is clear: acquire a star now and build the next era around him.
