USPS Will Pause Mail Nationwide for One Day in February — Here’s What’s Behind It

Mail delivery and in-person postal services across the United States will briefly come to a halt later this month as the U.S. Postal Service closes all post office locations for a single day.

The nationwide pause is scheduled for Monday, February 16, 2026. On that day, USPS will suspend retail operations and standard mail delivery in observance of Presidents Day, a federal public holiday.

Because USPS operates as a federal agency, it follows the government holiday calendar. Presidents Day is observed every year on the third Monday of February and has long been one of the dates when postal services temporarily stop.

While physical counters will be closed, customers will still have access to limited mailing options. Thousands of self-service kiosks located inside post office lobbies remain operational, with many available around the clock even on holidays.

These kiosks allow users to purchase stamps, print shipping labels for domestic and international mail, weigh packages, send pre-paid parcels, and check tracking information without assistance from postal staff.

USPS has also expanded alternative drop-off and pickup solutions in recent years, including Rapid Dropoff Stations for pre-labeled packages, QR-code label printing at select locations, and Smart Lockers that support secure package pickup and returns.

Customers expecting deliveries or planning shipments should factor the one-day pause into their schedules. Items already in the system will resume moving once operations restart the following day.

Beyond Presidents Day, USPS observes several other holiday closures throughout the year, including Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Updated holiday hours by location can be checked through the official USPS Post Office Locator.

Normal mail delivery and retail services will resume nationwide on Tuesday, February 17.
