MUNICH, October 23, 2026 — Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was reportedly taken to a Munich hospital by ambulance on Friday, just two days after returning to the touchline following an illness.
BILD reported the hospital transfer, according to accounts published by GOAL and SB Nation. A helicopter reportedly landed earlier at Bayern’s Säbener Straße training ground, although the initial reports described Kompany travelling to hospital by ambulance.
The reason for the transfer and the 40-year-old’s condition remained unclear. There was also no confirmed information about whether he would be available for Bayern’s Bundesliga match against SC Freiburg on Sunday, October 25.
The news follows a week in which Kompany’s health had already disrupted his coaching duties. He missed training sessions and a press conference before returning for Wednesday’s 2–2 Champions League draw with Arsenal.
Illness had restricted Kompany’s movement
The first visible signs of difficulty came during Bayern’s 6–1 victory over RB Leipzig on October 17. Kompany remained seated for much of the match while assistant coach Aaron Danks delivered instructions from the touchline. He subsequently missed his post-match media duties.
Earlier reports described a viral infection and hip discomfort. German reporting suggested the illness had aggravated an existing scar-tissue problem, making movement difficult. Those accounts concerned his symptoms earlier in the week; they did not establish the cause of Friday’s hospital transfer.
Bayern’s official coverage of the October 20 pre-match press conference confirmed that Kompany was absent while resting because of a viral infection. Danks appeared alongside Serge Gnabry instead.
Speaking ahead of the Arsenal match, Danks said his colleague needed time to recover.
“Vincent has a virus. It’s important that he rests. He’s at home resting. We take it day by day.”
The comments were carried by Bavarian Football Works, citing remarks shared by Bayern & Germany. Danks also described pain affecting Kompany’s legs and said the coaching staff remained in regular contact with him.
Hospital report follows return against Arsenal
Kompany recovered sufficiently to oversee Wednesday’s Champions League meeting with Arsenal. After the 2–2 draw, he acknowledged that he had continued pushing himself despite being unwell.
“I didn’t listen to my body,” Kompany said. “Now I’m feeling better, otherwise I wouldn’t be here.”
Those remarks, reported by Bavarian Football Works, preceded Friday’s reported hospital transfer and should not be read as an update on his current condition.
Bayern are now preparing to face Freiburg on Sunday. The initial hospital reports provided no recovery timetable or confirmation of whether Kompany would be able to lead the team.
GOAL’s report said the reason for the ambulance transfer was not yet known. No diagnosis or explanation connecting it to his earlier illness had been established in the reports reviewed.
Away from football, Kompany is married to Carla Higgs, and the couple have three children. Raised in Brussels by a Belgian mother and a father who fled Congo, he has spoken about how his parents’ sacrifices shaped his outlook. In a recent interview with the Bundesliga’s official website, he reflected that the greatest advantage in life can be “the family and the people around you.” His words offer a glimpse of the person behind the Bayern coach as supporters await further news about his health.
In other football news, Bruno Fernandes’ Cheshire home was burgled while the Manchester United captain was away in Italy.
