Walmart Finally Accepts Apple Pay and Google Pay: Tap to Pay Starts August 24

Walmart is making a major checkout change in the U.S., finally bringing Tap to Pay — including Apple Pay and Google Pay — to its stores after years of relying heavily on its own mobile payment system.

The rollout begins Monday, August 24, 2026, at select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations. Walmart plans to expand contactless payments to all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026, with fuel stations scheduled to follow by mid-2027.

For shoppers, the key detail is that August 24 is the start of a phased rollout. Apple Pay and Google Pay will not necessarily work at every Walmart immediately.

What payment options is Walmart adding?

Once Tap to Pay is activated at a location, customers will be able to use eligible contactless credit and debit cards, smartphones and smartwatches. That includes Apple Pay and Google Pay on compatible devices.

Walmart says customers can also add eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards to supported digital wallets, giving cardholders another way to access their cards.

When will Walmart accept Apple Pay?

Selected Walmart and Sam’s Club locations begin getting Tap to Pay on August 24. According to Walmart’s official Tap to Pay announcement, the company plans to expand the payment option to all U.S. Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations by the end of 2026, followed by fuel stations by mid-2027.

Walmart has not published a nationwide store-by-store schedule showing which locations will receive the feature first. During the rollout, customers should look for the contactless symbol on the checkout terminal and keep another payment method available.

Google Pay is included in the rollout

Google has confirmed that shoppers will be able to use Google Pay at participating Walmart and Sam’s Club locations. Customers can add an eligible card to Google Wallet and tap their compatible device at checkout.

The development also builds on a broader Walmart-Google relationship that includes digital commerce and AI-powered shopping initiatives.

Walmart Pay is not going away

Apple Pay and Google Pay are being added as choices rather than replacing Walmart’s existing payment options. Customers can continue using cash, conventional cards and Walmart Pay.

Sam’s Club members will also retain services such as Scan & Go. The difference is that shoppers will increasingly have the option of using the contactless wallet or card they already use elsewhere.

Why Walmart accepting Apple Pay matters

Walmart has been a notable holdout against conventional NFC-based mobile payments. Instead, it promoted Walmart Pay and previously participated in CurrentC, a retailer-backed mobile payment initiative that was eventually discontinued.

The reversal comes as Walmart continues investing in e-commerce, technology, membership and advertising. Those businesses have become increasingly important to the retailer, as highlighted by Walmart’s latest quarterly earnings and e-commerce performance.

Adding standard contactless payments removes a longstanding inconvenience for shoppers who routinely use Apple Pay, Google Pay or tap-enabled bank cards at other retailers.

Will Tap to Pay work at Walmart self-checkout?

Walmart has announced Tap to Pay as a checkout option but has not provided a detailed nationwide breakdown of which individual registers or self-checkout terminals will be activated first.

During the phased introduction, shoppers should check the payment terminal for the contactless symbol rather than assuming every register supports tapping.

Can you tap a physical card at Walmart?

Yes. The upgrade is broader than mobile wallets. Eligible contactless credit and debit cards can also be tapped at participating terminals.

Customers can check their physical card for the contactless-wave symbol. Compatible phones and smartwatches can also be used.

Sam’s Club is getting Tap to Pay too

Sam’s Club is included from the beginning. Selected clubs will receive Tap to Pay starting August 24, with all U.S. clubs targeted by the end of 2026.

Members will therefore gain Apple Pay, Google Pay and eligible contactless-card payments alongside existing Sam’s Club checkout options.

What about Walmart fuel stations?

Fuel stations have a later timetable. Walmart plans to introduce Tap to Pay at its U.S. fuel locations by mid-2027. A store could therefore support Apple Pay inside before its associated fuel pumps do.

What shoppers should know before paying

Apple Pay users should have an eligible card added to Apple Wallet, while Google Pay users can prepare an eligible card in Google Wallet. The contactless symbol on an activated terminal will indicate where tapping is available.

The change arrives during a wider technology push at Walmart. The company is also expanding other areas of its digital business, while major U.S. companies continue investing heavily in AI and digital infrastructure.

For shoppers, the immediate benefit is simpler: starting August 24, contactless payment choices will begin expanding at Walmart and Sam’s Club, with availability increasing across the U.S. through the end of 2026.
