Washington Winery Fire Destroys 4.5 Million Gallons Near Mattawa

A large fire at a wine production facility near Mattawa, Washington, has left one of the region’s major bulk wine operations badly damaged, with officials reporting that about 4.5 million gallons of wine were stored inside the building when the blaze broke out.

The fire happened Tuesday afternoon at Central Washington Wine Production Group, a commercial wine processing and storage site located in the Port of Mattawa industrial area along State Route 243 South. The property also includes the UpWest Wine Tasting Room.

No injuries were reported, but the scale of the fire, the amount of wine inside and the loss of production equipment quickly turned the incident into a major blow for the local wine industry.

What happened at the Mattawa wine facility?

Emergency crews were called to the 22000 block of State Route 243 South after smoke was spotted coming from the facility at about 2:30 p.m. A passerby reportedly noticed the smoke and alerted local fire officials.

Grant County Fire District 8, which has a station near the site, arrived quickly and found heavy smoke coming from the commercial building. Employees who were inside the facility when the fire started were able to evacuate safely.

Because of the size of the building and the hazards inside, several agencies joined the response. Fire crews from Grant County Fire District 3, Grant County Fire District 8, Royal Slope Fire Rescue EMS and the Hanford Fire Department helped battle the blaze. Grant PUD, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, emergency management staff and the Grant County Fire Marshal’s Office also assisted at the scene.

Officials said the fire was brought under control by early evening, with crews continuing to check the damaged building for hotspots and possible fire spread.

Why the fire was difficult to fight

The facility was not a small tasting room or retail winery. It was a large industrial wine production and storage operation with millions of gallons of wine, stainless steel tanks, production machinery and other equipment inside.

Fire officials said pressurized stainless steel wine production equipment created added safety concerns for firefighters. Large commercial buildings can also be difficult to access once fire spreads through the interior, especially when smoke fills multiple sections of the structure.

Photos from the scene showed major damage to the building, with parts of the facility appearing heavily burned. Local reports said the building and its contents were considered a total loss, with damage estimates reaching tens of millions of dollars.

The most striking figure from the incident is the volume of wine involved. About 4.5 million gallons of wine were reportedly inside the facility, making the fire significant not only for the business but also for the broader Columbia Valley wine supply chain.

Impact on Washington’s wine industry

Central Washington Wine Production Group works with grapes from vineyards across the Columbia Valley AVA, one of Washington’s most important wine-producing regions. The business specializes in bulk wine production and custom wine solutions, serving growers, brands and buyers that rely on large-scale processing and storage.

That makes the damage more than a single-building loss. When a bulk wine facility is destroyed, the impact can reach vineyard partners, wine labels, distributors and future production schedules.

The loss of stored wine may affect inventory, while destroyed tanks and equipment could take time to replace. Industrial wine infrastructure is expensive, specialized and not always easy to rebuild quickly.

For a region where agriculture, processing and logistics are closely connected, the Mattawa fire is likely to be watched closely by growers and wine businesses across Eastern Washington.

Cause of the fire still under review

Officials had not confirmed the exact cause of the fire. Early information suggested flames may have been seen near an electrical panel at one end of the building, but investigators had not issued a final determination.

The Grant County Fire Marshal’s Office is expected to examine the site as part of the investigation. Because the building suffered extensive damage, determining the cause may take time.

Authorities said there was no reported risk to the public. No injuries were reported among workers or emergency responders.

The Mattawa fire also came on the same day as a separate RV fire in Desert Aire. In that incident, the RV was destroyed and a nearby home suffered some burn damage, but firefighters were able to prevent more serious damage to the residence.

Additional local reporting on the wine facility fire was published by the Tri-City Herald.
