A major police investigation is underway after the bodies of a man and a woman were discovered inside a home in Melbourne’s south-west during a welfare check.
Victoria Police confirmed officers attended a property on Melton Close in Werribee shortly after 3.30pm on Thursday afternoon after concerns were raised about the occupants. Inside the home, police located the bodies of a 31-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman.
The shocking discovery has drawn widespread attention across Melbourne after the case quickly began trending online under searches linked to police activity in Werribee.
Authorities have not yet publicly identified the pair, and detectives are continuing to piece together what happened inside the suburban property.
Police believe the pair knew each other
Investigators said the man and woman were known to each other, although police have not confirmed the nature of their relationship.
Detectives are also not currently searching for any other person in relation to the deaths, an important detail that suggests investigators may not believe there is an ongoing threat to the wider community.
A crime scene was established at the home while forensic officers examined the property. Detectives are expected to review evidence collected from inside the residence, along with nearby CCTV footage and statements from neighbours or people connected to the pair.
According to The Age, the deaths remain unexplained as investigators wait for further forensic information.
Police have confirmed a postmortem examination will now be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Until those results are completed, authorities are expected to remain cautious about publicly discussing possible circumstances surrounding the case.

Community reacts as investigation continues
The incident has unsettled residents in Werribee, one of Melbourne’s fastest-growing suburbs, where major police investigations rarely attract this level of public attention.
Emergency services and police vehicles were seen around Melton Close following the discovery, with parts of the area cordoned off while investigators worked at the scene.
Cases involving welfare checks can often become complex investigations because officers are usually responding after family members, neighbours, friends, or workplaces raise concerns about a person’s wellbeing after losing contact with them.
In this case, police have not disclosed who requested the welfare check or how long the pair may have been inside the property before officers arrived.
Detectives from the Homicide Squad are continuing inquiries and are expected to work closely with forensic specialists over the coming days. Investigators may also examine phone records, digital communications, and the recent movements of both individuals as they establish a timeline.
The deaths have also reignited discussions around community safety and emergency response procedures in Melbourne’s outer suburbs. For now, police are urging anyone with information that could assist investigators to contact Crime Stoppers. Authorities are expected to provide further updates once postmortem findings and forensic examinations are completed.
