Woolworths Unveils New $5 Fresh Meal Push as Time-Poor Aussies Change Shopping Habits

Woolworths is rolling out a major in-store change across 125 supermarkets in Australia as the retail giant responds to changing shopping habits among busy consumers. Customers walking into selected stores are now being greeted with expanded ready-made meal sections featuring more than 380 products designed to reduce meal-prep time.

The updated range includes fresh lasagne, slow-cooked meals, high-protein dishes, mid-week roast options and grab-and-go dinner packs starting from around $5 per serve. Unlike traditional frozen microwave meals, many of the new products are positioned as fresh convenience foods that require minimal preparation while still offering a home-cooked feel.

The supermarket chain says the expansion reflects “genuine changes in customer behaviour” as more Australians look for fast meal solutions during the working week.

Why Woolworths is focusing on convenience meals

Retail expert Gary Mortimer said shoppers are increasingly prioritising convenience because many households no longer have time to cook meals entirely from scratch every night.

“We don’t generally have a lot of time during the week to put a meal together from scratch,” Mortimer told Yahoo News, explaining that consumers are shifting toward fresh ready-to-eat options instead of frozen dinners.

According to internal Woolworths data, 48 per cent of Australian home cooks regularly rotate between five or fewer recipes. The company believes its expanded range can help customers add variety without increasing cooking time.

Woolworths has also redesigned the layout in some locations so shoppers can quickly enter the store, pick up meal solutions near the front and leave without needing to walk through multiple aisles.

The full immersive setup is currently appearing in selected locations including Maroubra Beach, Bondi Junction, Chatswood, Surry Hills, Potts Point and Lane Cove in New South Wales, along with stores including Fortitude Valley, Spring Hill and Buderim in Queensland. However, Woolworths confirmed the products themselves are being stocked nationwide.

Fresh meals, less waste and changing consumer habits

Another key reason behind the strategy is reducing food waste. Mortimer explained that cooking from scratch often leads to leftover vegetables, sauces and ingredients being thrown away, while pre-portioned meals are designed to match standard serving sizes.

Woolworths says many of the meals are specifically packaged to “lock in peak freshness” while helping customers prepare dinner faster during busy weekdays.

The supermarket industry is increasingly competing with takeaway apps and fast-food chains for dinner spending. Rather than only selling ingredients, major retailers now want to become a quick dinner solution for time-poor workers, students and older Australians.

The retailer’s ready-meal push comes as its wider grocery pricing strategy remains under scrutiny, with Woolworths also facing attention over the ACCC grocery pricing case involving 12 supermarket items.

More details about the supermarket’s ready-meal expansion are available through Woolworths Group’s official announcement.
