Xbox Saves Kojima’s PHYSINT After PlayStation Pulls the Plug

Hideo Kojima’s ambitious action-espionage game PHYSINT is moving forward under Xbox after PlayStation Studios unexpectedly ended its involvement in the project. The new agreement keeps the long-awaited title alive and significantly expands Kojima Productions’ existing relationship with Microsoft.

Kojima said his studio was notified in mid-June 2026 that PlayStation intended to cancel its collaboration on PHYSINT. Determined to continue development, Kojima Productions spent the following three months searching for another publishing partner before reaching an agreement with Xbox.

The announcement represents a striking change for a game originally unveiled as a major collaboration between Kojima Productions and Sony Interactive Entertainment. It also means Xbox will now publish both PHYSINT and Kojima’s experimental horror project, OD.

Why PlayStation stepped away from PHYSINT

PlayStation announced that it had made the “difficult decision” to withdraw from the PHYSINT collaboration after careful consideration. The company did not provide a specific financial, creative or production-related reason for ending the project.

“We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima’s vision for the game.”

Sony added that its relationship with Kojima remains strong after nearly three decades of creative cooperation and said it expects to continue working closely with him and his independent studio in the future.

That language suggests the split concerns PHYSINT rather than a wider breakdown between Kojima and PlayStation. Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding series has been closely associated with Sony, while the original PHYSINT announcement was presented during a PlayStation State of Play broadcast in January 2024.

Kojima offered a more detailed account of the decision, saying the notice from PlayStation arrived unexpectedly.

“PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS.”

He said the studio searched “tirelessly” for a new partner and held discussions with people across several fields before finding common ground with Xbox. Development is now continuing, although the change of publisher may affect previously planned technology, production arrangements and release platforms.

Xbox’s decision to take over the project comes as Microsoft continues building its future games portfolio. That strategy was also visible during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 announcements, where the company placed renewed emphasis on major first-party games and long-term creative partnerships.

What Xbox’s PHYSINT deal means for the game

Xbox confirmed that it will publish PHYSINT, describing the agreement as the next stage of its partnership with Kojima Productions.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the company was honored that Kojima had selected Xbox as the project’s new home, adding that his willingness to challenge established conventions reflects the type of creativity Microsoft wants to support.

“Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life.”

Kojima said Xbox understands the studio’s creative vision and promised that PHYSINT would continue pursuing its original ambition of redefining the action-espionage genre.

The deal goes considerably further than publishing a single game. Xbox said its partnership with Kojima Productions will expand across film and television, although neither company has announced specific screen projects connected to PHYSINT.

This wider agreement fits Kojima’s original description of PHYSINT as an experience intended to blur the boundary between a video game and a film. When the project was announced, he said it would combine interactive gameplay with cinematic storytelling, performances, fashion, sound and advanced visual technology.

PHYSINT has frequently been viewed as Kojima’s return to the espionage genre he helped popularize through Metal Gear. However, it is a new intellectual property and is not officially connected to the Metal Gear franchise.

Kojima Productions revealed the first PHYSINT visual artwork during its 10th-anniversary “Beyond the Strand” event in September 2025. The studio also confirmed three performers for the project:

  • Charlee Fraser
  • Ma Dong-Seok, also known as Don Lee
  • Minami Hamabe

No character names or detailed plot information have been released. The initial artwork showed a shadowed figure holding a firearm, reinforcing the game’s tactical-espionage direction without revealing its setting or protagonist.

Xbox was already working with Kojima Productions on OD, a separate project designed to explore fear while mixing elements of games and film. The PHYSINT agreement turns that relationship into a much broader creative partnership involving two major games and potential film and television productions.

For PlayStation players, the central question is whether PHYSINT will still appear on a Sony console. Xbox and Kojima Productions have not yet announced supported platforms or described the game as an Xbox exclusive. The publishing change therefore makes a PlayStation release uncertain, but it does not by itself provide final confirmation that the game will be unavailable on PlayStation.

The absence of confirmed platforms is important because Xbox has increasingly adopted varied release strategies for its games. Until Microsoft or Kojima Productions provides a formal platform list, claims of permanent console exclusivity remain unconfirmed.

The move also arrives during a busy period for competing gaming platforms, following recent presentations including the PlayStation State of Play showcase and September’s Nintendo Direct events.

PHYSINT still has no confirmed release date, gameplay footage or announced platforms. Kojima previously indicated that full production would begin after Death Stranding 2, suggesting that the project remains several years away from release.

What is now certain is that the game has survived PlayStation’s withdrawal. Xbox will provide the publishing partnership needed to continue development, while Kojima Productions retains the central creative role in building the new espionage title.
