This morning, thousands of 2degrees customers across New Zealand experienced unexpected trouble making and receiving mobile calls after a nationwide network fault disrupted services for several hours.

The company confirmed a technical issue in its mobile network was to blame for the disruption, which began in the early hours of the day. According to reporting from RNZ, users across multiple regions reported call failures, dropped connections and “no service” messages before the underlying fault was identified and isolated by engineers.

In a later update, 2degrees said it had resolved the fault and that services were returning to normal. Coverage for voice calls was restored progressively through the morning, with the network now operating as usual for most customers. The provider also stressed that emergency services were not compromised, confirming that 111 calls remained available throughout the outage.

The issue appears to have affected the call-routing side of the mobile network rather than mobile data, meaning many people could still access the internet on their phones while being unable to complete standard voice calls. Local media, including the New Zealand Herald, reported that some customers remained confused for several hours, initially assuming the fault lay with their device or local cell tower before 2degrees confirmed a wider problem.

2degrees has apologised to affected customers, saying its technical teams “worked urgently” to restore service and are now reviewing what went wrong to reduce the risk of a similar failure in future. No details have yet been released about the precise cause of the fault or how many subscribers were impacted at peak.

For users still experiencing issues, 2degrees recommends restarting the handset, toggling flight mode on and off, or manually searching for the network before trying another call. If problems continue, customers are advised to contact 2degrees support or check the company’s official network-status page for any remaining localised faults.

Today’s outage comes during a period of heightened sensitivity around network reliability, with New Zealanders increasingly reliant on mobile coverage for work, family contact and emergency alerts. Recent severe weather has already tested local infrastructure, and earlier this year Swikblog covered how storms and heavy rain affected connectivity and power in Auckland in detail in our report on Auckland’s heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast.

While 2degrees says the latest disruption has now been fully fixed, the company is expected to face questions from regulators and customers about resilience, redundancy and how quickly future faults can be detected and communicated to the public.
