Kentucky opens SEC play Saturday with a high-stakes road test at Alabama — and the Wildcats are trying to solve a problem they’ve rarely faced in this series: a true losing run.

Why this matchup feels different

Kentucky has lost three straight meetings with Alabama — all of them last season — marking the first time in series history the Wildcats have dropped three consecutive games to the Crimson Tide. Alabama has also won four of the last five dating back to the beginning of 2023.

Even with the recent swing, Kentucky still owns the all-time edge in the rivalry at 117–44. Saturday is a chance to steady the narrative early in conference play — and to reset a matchup Alabama has controlled lately.

Kentucky arrives at 9–4 after building momentum with a four-game winning streak that included wins over St. John’s and Indiana. Alabama enters at 10–3 and opens SEC action at home ranked No. 15 in both the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25.

The spotlight is sharper because last season Alabama swept the series — including a 99–70 win in the SEC Tournament that represented the Crimson Tide’s largest margin of victory ever against Kentucky.

Kentucky coach Mark Pope knows the SEC opener will stress-test everything Kentucky believes it has improved since November. He pointed to defensive communication as the foundation, saying it has been “massively important,” and added that the team has made “huge progress” through the nonconference slate — but that it will be “tested in a huge way” on Saturday.
