Jaguar Land Rover has recalled 2,278 Jaguar I-Pace electric vehicles in the United States after identifying a potential defect in the high-voltage battery that could increase the risk of overheating. The recall affects certain 2020 and 2021 Jaguar I-Pace models and follows safety documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
According to the recall notice, the battery pack in affected vehicles could develop an internal fault capable of generating excessive heat. In uncommon cases, that overheating could produce smoke or lead to a fire. Jaguar Land Rover is offering an interim software update free of charge while engineers continue working on a permanent repair.
The temporary software update can be installed at a Jaguar dealership or delivered over the air where available. It limits the battery’s maximum state of charge to 90%, reducing stress on the battery while the company completes its investigation.
What caused the Jaguar I-Pace recall?
Recall documents point to a possible manufacturing defect involving a folded anode tab inside certain lithium-ion battery cells. The anode tab carries electrical current within the battery cell. If it becomes bent or misaligned during production, it can increase the chance of an internal short circuit.
Internal short circuits are considered one of the most serious battery-related safety concerns because they can rapidly generate heat. In severe situations, that heat can trigger thermal runaway, a chain reaction capable of damaging the battery and potentially causing a fire.
The affected battery cells were manufactured by LG Energy Solution at its facility in Poland, according to NHTSA recall filings. Jaguar and the supplier are continuing to inspect battery modules identified by updated diagnostic software as potentially showing characteristics linked to the defect.
What should owners do now?
Until the interim software update has been installed, Jaguar recommends taking several precautions to reduce any potential safety risk. Owners should avoid charging beyond 90% and disconnect the charger once that level has been reached.
- Limit battery charging to a maximum of 90%.
- Park the vehicle outdoors and away from buildings whenever practical.
- Charge the vehicle outside if possible.
- Monitor the vehicle for warning messages, smoke, unusual heat, or burning odors.
- Call emergency services immediately if smoke or fire is observed.
Reducing the battery’s charge limit decreases the amount of stored energy inside the pack, helping lower thermal stress while engineers complete testing. Although many electric vehicle manufacturers recommend avoiding regular 100% charging to help preserve long-term battery health, Jaguar says this temporary limit is intended specifically as a safety measure.
What happens next?
Jaguar Land Rover expects owner notification letters to begin mailing on April 3. The company says a final repair is still being developed. Depending on the outcome of ongoing engineering analysis, the permanent remedy could include updated software, replacement of affected battery modules, or additional corrective measures.
Battery recalls continue to receive close attention across the automotive industry because lithium-ion battery systems store large amounts of energy.
