A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck China’s Xinjiang region near Urumqi on Thursday afternoon, with tremors felt across nearby cities but no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The quake hit at 07:39 GMT (3:39 pm local time), about 62 kilometers southeast of Urumqi, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). It originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, which made the shaking more noticeable in surrounding areas.
Residents in Urumqi, along with nearby cities like Changji and Turpan, likely felt light to moderate shaking. Shallow earthquakes tend to be felt more strongly, even when the magnitude is not very high.
Initial data placed the epicenter at 43.26°N and 87.79°E. Multiple seismic agencies, including USGS, EMSC, and IRIS, reported the magnitude at 5.2, while Germany’s GFZ and RaspberryShake estimated it slightly lower at 5.0.
Despite the tremors, early reports suggest there was no significant structural damage. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation, and data may be revised as more information comes in.
Why this quake was felt strongly
The key factor behind this earthquake was its shallow depth. At just 10 kilometers below the surface, the seismic waves reached the ground quickly, making the tremor feel sharper.
According to the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program, shallow earthquakes are often more noticeable and can cause stronger shaking compared to deeper ones.
Xinjiang sits in a seismically active zone, and moderate earthquakes like this are not unusual, though they don’t always lead to damage.
Another quake reported in Indonesia
On the same day, a separate magnitude 4.5 earthquake was recorded near Pelabuhanratu in Indonesia’s West Java region. The tremor occurred at 06:42 GMT at a depth of 7 kilometers, according to local authorities.
The Indonesian quake was weaker and expected to cause only very light shaking, with no damage reported.
For real-time updates, earthquake activity can be tracked on the USGS live map.
The Xinjiang quake, while moderate, drew attention due to its proximity to Urumqi and its shallow depth, but early signs suggest the region avoided major impact.
