Hulu App Gets Relief as Disney Confirms No Current Shutdown Plan

Hulu’s future looked uncertain for months, but Disney’s latest move gives the app something rare in the streaming business: breathing room.

Disney is pushing Hulu deeper into Disney+, adding profile linking that lets eligible subscribers carry over Hulu watch history, saved titles and recommendations. Yet the company is also making clear that Hulu is not being switched off right now. For viewers who still open Hulu every night out of habit, that distinction matters.

The update comes at a sensitive moment for Disney’s streaming strategy. The company has spent years bringing Hulu content closer to Disney+, first through bundles and in-app hubs, and now through a more connected profile experience. But the new rollout stops short of a clean break from Hulu’s standalone app.

Disney+ gets more Hulu data, but Hulu stays alive

Disney says eligible Hulu users can link their profile to Disney+ using the same MyDisney login. Once linked, Hulu titles watched in the Hulu app can appear in Disney+ under “Continue Watching,” while saved Hulu titles can move into the Disney+ watchlist. Recommendations based on Hulu viewing can also show up inside the Disney+ “For You” section.

The company’s own update says all Hulu subscribers will continue to have access to the standalone Hulu app, even as more Hulu features are brought into Disney+. That line is important because the public conversation around Hulu has often moved faster than Disney’s actual product changes. The latest Disney profile-linking update suggests a gradual migration, not an immediate shutdown.

For Disney, the strategy is easy to understand. A single app can reduce friction, improve recommendations and make the bundle feel more valuable. For subscribers, however, the Hulu app still carries years of habit, saved libraries and brand recognition. That makes a sudden cutoff risky, especially for households that use Hulu differently from Disney+.

The new feature is also not universal. Disney says profile linking is tied to eligible accounts and adult profiles. Some Hulu plans and add-ons remain outside the full Disney+ experience for now, including Live TV and certain extra features. Those pieces are still available in Hulu and are expected to move into Disney+ later.

That gives Hulu a practical reason to stay active. It is not just a legacy icon on a phone screen. It remains the place where some subscribers can access parts of the service that Disney+ has not fully absorbed.

The real story is control, not just convenience

The deeper issue is not whether Disney can technically combine two apps. It is whether Disney can make one streaming home feel complete without alienating viewers who signed up for Hulu in the first place.

Hulu has a different identity from Disney+. It is linked with adult dramas, FX shows, network TV, reality programming and next-day episodes. Disney+ has historically leaned more heavily on family brands, Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and National Geographic. Combining those libraries gives Disney a broader entertainment engine, but it also forces the company to manage two very different audience expectations inside one product.

That is why the “no current shutdown plan” message lands strongly. It tells subscribers that Disney wants the benefits of integration without forcing every viewer into a hard reset today. It also gives the company time to test whether Disney+ can carry Hulu’s full role before making a more permanent decision.

For streaming rivals, the move is another sign that the industry is leaving the app explosion era behind. After years of separate services chasing growth, the biggest players are now trying to simplify discovery, bundle subscriptions and keep viewers inside fewer platforms for longer.

Swikblog previously covered how Hulu’s place inside Disney’s ecosystem was already shifting when the Hulu app began leaving Nintendo Switch. The new Disney+ profile-linking rollout adds another piece to that same story: Hulu is becoming more deeply connected to Disney+, but the standalone app still has a role for now.

For subscribers, the safest reading is simple. Hulu is not disappearing today, but its center of gravity is moving. Disney+ is becoming the main door to Disney’s streaming bundle, while Hulu remains open for viewers who still need it, prefer it or rely on features that have not yet crossed over.

That makes this update less of a shutdown notice and more of a transition marker. Disney is training users to live inside Disney+, but Hulu has not reached its final scene.
