Nick Daicos Sent for Scans as Pies Injury Crisis Deepens After Eagles Win

Nick Daicos has been sent for precautionary scans on a sore foot after starring in Collingwood’s 13.14 (92) to 12.10 (82) win over West Coast, adding to a growing injury list that also includes Jamie Elliott, Darcy Moore and Will Hayes before the Magpies face the Western Bulldogs.

Quick summary about the Injury : Daicos is being checked for a foot issue after saying it was likely stomped on. Elliott is awaiting scans on a left knee injury, Moore is set for further assessment on another hamstring concern, and Hayes suffered a dislocated shoulder.

The win at the MCG was meant to centre on Scott Pendlebury’s record-breaking 433rd AFL/VFL game, but Collingwood finished the match with several medical concerns that could shape selection before next Saturday night’s clash with the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium.

Daicos was still best afield despite the scare, finishing with 34 disposals and three crucial goals. He later told Seven Network his foot had likely been stomped on and described the scan as precautionary.

“I just had, I think, my foot stomped on,” Daicos said. “So just making sure there’s nothing wrong with it, but it feels good.”

That confidence will be welcomed by Collingwood, because Daicos remains central to the Magpies’ midfield balance, ball movement and scoring threat. Even a minor foot issue would be watched closely given the short turnaround into a Bulldogs match that could place heavy pressure on Collingwood’s available depth.

Jamie Elliott knee scare adds the biggest concern

The most worrying moment came late in the final quarter when Jamie Elliott landed awkwardly on his left leg after flying for a mark. The 33-year-old immediately grabbed at his knee and was taken from the field on a stretcher.

Coach Craig McRae said Collingwood was hopeful Elliott had avoided the worst-case ACL injury, but scans will determine the extent of the damage. Elliott later said the pain relief wore off quickly overnight and admitted the knee was still tender on Sunday.

Elliott’s situation is significant because he remains one of Collingwood’s most important forward-half players. His aerial ability, pressure and experience often give the Magpies a different scoring option when games become tight, and his absence would force another reshuffle in attack.

Captain Darcy Moore is also set for scans after another hamstring issue. Moore has played only four games this season because of calf and hamstring concerns, and Saturday’s match was the third time this year he failed to finish a game. His next appearance will be his 200th AFL match.

AFL coaching great Mick Malthouse questioned Collingwood’s decision to use Moore in the ruck, arguing the move risked placing more stress on his body. McRae defended the call, saying Moore’s workload was managed and that the club would “not leave a stone unturned” in finding support for him.

Bulldogs test comes with selection pressure

Will Hayes also suffered a dislocated shoulder, leaving the Magpies with several injury calls before facing the Bulldogs. The latest update from the AFL’s official report on Collingwood’s injury concerns confirms Daicos, Moore, Elliott and Hayes are all being assessed.

The wider round also brought another serious injury, with Carlton utility Matt Carroll requiring surgery after scans confirmed an ACL rupture in the Blues’ win over Port Adelaide.

The injury cluster leaves Collingwood facing two separate questions before selection: whether Daicos’ foot issue is only minor, and how much cover the Magpies can find if Elliott, Moore or Hayes are ruled out. The Bulldogs match now carries added pressure because the result against West Coast came at a cost, even on a day when Pendlebury’s milestone and Daicos’ performance should have dominated the story.

For Collingwood, Daicos’ own confidence is the strongest early sign. But with Elliott, Moore and Hayes also under injury clouds, the Magpies’ depth is now facing a serious test before the Bulldogs clash.
