A San Marcos artist is now part of a major national milestone celebration after designing an official U.S. Mint coin connected to America’s 250th anniversary. Chris Polentz, a San Diego-area artist known for detailed symbolic artwork, created the design for the 2026 Charters of Freedom Platinum Proof Coin – Declaration of Independence, one of the Mint’s most anticipated collectible releases tied to the country’s semiquincentennial.
Polentz was selected through the U.S. Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program, which works with outside artists on official coin and medal designs. His artwork appears on the obverse side of the coin and was later engraved by Joseph Menna, the 14th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.
The collectible coin officially launched on February 6, 2026, and serves as the opening release in the Mint’s new three-year Charters of Freedom Platinum Proof Coin Series. The program celebrates the three founding documents that shaped the United States: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Design Inspired by America’s Founding Moment
Polentz’s design centers on rays of sunlight breaking through dark clouds, symbolizing hope and the birth of a new nation during uncertain times. A large quill appears prominently in the foreground, directly referencing the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
The reverse side of the coin features a soaring American eagle, one of the country’s most recognizable national symbols. Together, the imagery was created to reflect freedom, resilience and the ideals connected to America’s founding.
According to the U.S. Mint, the coin is struck at the West Point Mint using one ounce of .9995 fine platinum. It carries a $100 face value and has a limited mintage of 15,000 coins, making it a significant release for collectors and numismatic enthusiasts.

The release comes as communities across the United States prepare events and commemorations tied to the country’s 250th anniversary in 2026. While many anniversary products are expected over the next year, official U.S. Mint releases are often viewed as long-term historical collectibles because of their limited production and direct connection to national milestones.
For the San Diego-area arts community, Polentz’s selection represents a rare achievement. Very few artists have their work permanently connected to official U.S. coinage, especially during a major national anniversary program.
The Mint plans to continue the Charters of Freedom series in 2027 with a Constitution-themed coin and in 2028 with a release honoring the Bill of Rights.
