Penn Station Fire Today Disrupts NJ Transit and Amtrak Service, 5 Workers Injured

A fire involving an Amtrak contractor maintenance vehicle near New York Penn Station turned Friday morning into a difficult commute for rail passengers across New York and New Jersey, disrupting NJ Transit, Amtrak and Long Island Rail Road service during one of the busiest travel windows of the day.

The fire was reported around 1:30 a.m. on Track 11, close to the Hudson River tunnels that carry trains between Manhattan and New Jersey. The location made the incident especially disruptive because those tunnels are among the most important rail links feeding Penn Station and the Northeast Corridor.

FDNY crews responded to the scene after reports of a work train fire. The incident grew into a second-alarm response, with 46 FDNY units and more than 140 emergency personnel involved. Five workers were injured, and two of them were taken to Bellevue Hospital with serious injuries.

Although firefighters brought the blaze under control before the morning rush fully developed, the damage had already created a wider transportation problem. Amtrak and NJ Transit reported damage to overhead wires and track infrastructure, forcing rail operators to reduce or suspend service while crews inspected the affected area.

NJ Transit suspended rail service between Newark Penn Station and New York Penn Station, leaving riders on the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line facing heavy delays and cancellations. The agency advised customers to work from home where possible or use alternate transportation.

To ease the pressure, NJ Transit tickets and passes were cross-honored on NJ Transit buses, private carrier buses and PATH service at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken and 33rd Street in Manhattan.

Amtrak also suspended service between New York and New Jersey as repair teams assessed the damage near the tunnels. The railroad said customers could change reservations or seek refunds while service recovery continued. Passengers were advised to check Amtrak service alerts before traveling.

Penn Station Faces Second Major Rail Fire Disruption in May

The Long Island Rail Road was also caught in the disruption after smoke and power issues affected Penn Station operations. LIRR service was temporarily suspended earlier Friday before mostly resuming, though some branches continued to show delays and cancellations during the morning commute.

The timing adds to growing concern around Penn Station’s rail infrastructure. Friday’s fire came only weeks after another Penn Station-related incident caused major service problems. Amtrak said full service was not expected to return until later in the day as crews worked to inspect and repair damaged infrastructure. Trains operating north and east of New York also experienced reduced service levels because of the incident.

According to Amtrak, an investigation is underway to determine what caused the maintenance vehicle fire. Officials have not yet announced a specific cause.

For commuters, the event was another reminder of how dependent the region’s transportation network is on a limited number of critical rail connections. While emergency crews were able to contain the fire, the resulting service disruptions affected thousands of passengers and highlighted the challenges facing one of the nation’s busiest rail hubs.

Travelers planning to use NJ Transit, Amtrak or LIRR services through Penn Station were encouraged to monitor official service advisories, expect delays and allow extra travel time as operations gradually returned to normal.
