Apple restored Apple TV late Sunday after an outage prevented thousands of users from signing in, streaming video or accessing subscriptions they had already purchased. The July 26, 2026 disruption was part of a wider Apple service incident involving Apple Music Subscriptions, Podcasts, AppleCare and several App Store systems.
Downdetector had received more than 3,500 Apple TV problem reports by about 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Apple initially provided no restoration timetable, but later marked the Apple TV disruption and most related problems as resolved at approximately 6:15 p.m. Pacific Time, or 9:15 p.m. ET.
Is Apple TV still down?
Apple TV was no longer listed as experiencing a widespread outage following the late-evening update. Users should now be able to sign in and stream normally, although service recovery can take longer for some accounts, devices or locations.
Apple’s official System Status page provides the latest availability information. If Apple TV shows a green indicator but remains unavailable, the problem may be limited to the user’s account, device, app or internet connection.
Apple TV outage timeline
- Sunday evening: Users began reporting Apple TV login, playback and subscription errors.
- About 7:30 p.m. ET: Downdetector reports exceeded 3,500.
- During the outage: Apple said Apple TV could be unavailable because of scheduled maintenance.
- About 9:15 p.m. ET: Apple reported that the Apple TV and previously listed developer-service problems had been resolved.
- After the main recovery: AppleCare on Device was reportedly the only related consumer issue still listed temporarily.
Downdetector’s total represents reports voluntarily submitted by users, not a confirmed count of every person affected.
What problems did users experience?
Most complaints involved users being unable to log in. Others could open the app but could not start or continue streaming, while some could not access the Apple TV app at all.
A particularly confusing error asked existing customers to purchase a subscription again. That message did not necessarily mean a plan had expired or been cancelled. Apple’s systems may have been temporarily unable to confirm that the account was entitled to paid content.
Users were also searching for answers after the outage became widely discussed online and appeared among rising Google searches. That attention reflected the sudden increase in complaints, but it did not establish how many countries or customers were affected.
Why was Apple TV not working?
Apple’s public status notice attributed the interruption to scheduled maintenance. The company did not disclose a deeper technical cause or explain why maintenance produced login, streaming and subscription errors.
Problems affecting App Store receipt verification and in-app purchases occurred at the same time, which may help explain some subscription-validation failures. However, Apple did not officially confirm that those systems caused the Apple TV payment prompts.
There was no evidence in the information released by Apple that the incident was a cyberattack, data breach or failure of customers’ physical Apple TV devices.
Which Apple services were affected?
Apple listed several maintenance notices and service problems:
- Apple TV: The service could be unavailable because of scheduled maintenance.
- Apple Music Subscriptions: Subscription features could be slow or unavailable.
- Podcasts: Some users experienced service problems.
- AppleCare on Device: AppleCare purchases made directly through eligible devices were temporarily unavailable.
- App Store: Routine maintenance was underway, although Apple initially said no user impact was expected.
- Apple Music: Routine maintenance was also listed with no expected user impact.
Apple’s separate developer dashboard reported problems with App Store in-app purchases, receipt verification, server APIs and server notifications. These services help apps process purchases, verify receipts and receive account or subscription updates.
The incident follows another disruption earlier in 2026 when Apple Music, Apple TV and the App Store experienced simultaneous problems. Apple has also faced more isolated incidents, including an Apple Weather app outage affecting iPhone users, showing why checking the company’s status dashboard can be more useful than immediately resetting a device.

Was the Apple TV device itself broken?
The outage affected Apple’s online service and app infrastructure, not necessarily the physical Apple TV streaming box. It could also affect the Apple TV app on smart televisions, iPhones, iPads, Macs, streaming devices and game consoles.
Restarting a device would not fix a central Apple outage while it remained active. It may, however, refresh an app session after service has been restored.
What should users do if Apple TV still does not work?
- Check Apple’s System Status page for a renewed outage.
- Close and reopen the Apple TV app.
- Confirm the device has a working internet connection.
- Verify that the correct Apple Account is signed in.
- Check that the Apple TV subscription remains active.
- Select “Restore Purchases” where that option is available.
- Restart the device and install pending software or app updates.
- Contact Apple Support if paid content remains unavailable.
Users should not immediately buy another subscription if asked to pay again. They should first check their subscription and purchase history. Anyone who receives a duplicate completed charge can report it through Apple’s billing support, while a pending transaction may disappear automatically if the purchase was not completed.
