Jetstar is replacing its free 7kg carry-on allowance with a cabin baggage system that separates underseat luggage from overhead storage.
From February 2, 2027, every Jetstar Airways fare will include one small bag that fits beneath the seat. Passengers carrying a cabin suitcase, duffel or larger backpack for an overhead locker will generally need to purchase Priority Carry-on.
Free cabin baggage is therefore not disappearing completely. However, the basic fare will no longer provide the overhead access currently available within the 7kg allowance.
What replaces Jetstar’s free 7kg allowance?
Jetstar’s current Starter allowance permits up to 7kg across two cabin items. Under the 2027 model, the complimentary allowance becomes one handbag, laptop bag or small backpack measuring no more than 40 × 30 × 20cm.
The item must fit beneath the seat. A lightweight cabin suitcase that exceeds these dimensions will not qualify, even if it weighs less than 7kg.
Passengers travelling with an infant under two on their lap will be allowed one additional underseat bag for baby items at no extra cost.
Paid overhead storage and the 10kg restriction
Priority Carry-on includes the underseat item plus one overhead bag measuring up to 56 Ă— 36 Ă— 23cm. Customers purchasing it will be placed in an earlier boarding group, although Jetstar says the order may change for operational reasons.
The airline will no longer routinely weigh cabin bags at the gate, but weight restrictions are not being removed entirely. No individual item can exceed 10kg, and passengers must be able to lift and store their own luggage safely.
A folding garment bag measuring up to 114 Ă— 60 Ă— 11cm can replace the standard overhead item when Priority Carry-on is included.
Priority Carry-on prices vary by route
The upgrade starts at $25 one-way on selected flights and remains subject to availability. Jetstar’s introductory examples include Launceston to Sydney from $25, Adelaide to Brisbane from $26 and Sydney to Melbourne from $33.
International examples include Perth to Bali from $39 and Cairns to Tokyo from $52. These launch prices were listed for selected travel between February 2 and March 18, 2027, and may vary by flight, availability and payment method.
Overhead places will be limited. If Priority Carry-on sells out, passengers needing more space may have to purchase checked baggage. Jetstar’s checked baggage arrangements are unchanged, with customers able to buy up to 40kg per passenger.
This distinction is important when assessing discounted tickets such as Jetstar’s previous free return fare sale covering more than 80 routes. Baggage additions can change the final amount paid even when the advertised base fare appears low.
What happens if a bag exceeds the allowance?
A traveller arriving with two items after booking only the free underseat allowance may be able to buy Priority Carry-on at the gate, provided it has not sold out.
If no overhead place remains, or a bag exceeds the permitted size or item limit, Jetstar may transfer it to the aircraft hold and charge an additional fee. A maximum of two cabin items applies when Priority Carry-on is included.
Which Jetstar flights are affected?
The policy applies to Jetstar Airways flights operating under the JQ code and departing on or after February 2, 2027. Flights leaving before that date retain their existing 7kg or 14kg arrangements.
Jetstar Japan services operating under the GK code are excluded. Passengers connecting between JQ and GK flights should check the allowance for each sector because different rules may apply within the same journey.
A return trip crossing the implementation date could also have different allowances in each direction. Travellers whose schedules change should recheck the operating code and baggage entitlement, particularly following adjustments such as Jetstar’s earlier reductions to selected Australia–New Zealand services.
Existing bookings receive transitional protection
Customers who booked before August 5, 2026, for an eligible JQ flight departing from February 2, 2027, will receive Priority Carry-on without paying the new charge. Jetstar says affected itineraries will be updated automatically.
Eligible customers who previously purchased the additional 7kg carry-on option will receive a refund for that add-on. The arrangement excludes group bookings involving 10 or more passengers.
Passengers can confirm measurements, exceptions and booking conditions through Jetstar’s official carry-on baggage update.
The practical impact will depend on the bag a passenger normally brings. Someone travelling with a compact backpack may continue without purchasing baggage, while a traveller using a conventional cabin suitcase should include Priority Carry-on when calculating the fare.
Why Jetstar is changing the system
Jetstar says feedback from passengers and crew identified gate weighing and difficulty finding overhead space as stressful parts of boarding. It expects allocating limited locker access in advance to make cabin storage more predictable and support smoother boarding.
The change will benefit passengers who prefer a small underseat bag and want to avoid routine 7kg checks. For those accustomed to taking a cabin suitcase overhead at no extra charge, it represents a reduction in what the basic fare includes.
Before booking travel from February 2, 2027, passengers should check the operating airline, measure every side of their luggage and confirm the allowance displayed on the itinerary. Under Jetstar’s new system, where a bag is stored will matter as much as its weight.
