Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandesâ home in Cheshire was burgled on Wednesday evening while he was away in Italy with his team. His family were understood to have been out of the property when the break-in happened.
A neighbour raised the alarm after spotting three unknown men in a rear garden in the Alderley Park area of Nether Alderley. Cheshire Police said officers were called at around 8.30pm on October 21, but the suspects had disappeared by the time they arrived.
Officers subsequently discovered that a property had been broken into and belongings stolen, according to the police statement reported by talkSPORT.
Fernandes returned to England with United in the early hours of Thursday following their 4â1 Champions League defeat by Como. The club is supporting the midfielder and his family, according to the Press Association.
What happened at Bruno Fernandesâ home?
The Sun reported that masked intruders targeted the six-bedroom house, which it valued at approximately ÂŁ4 million, and took designer jewellery and other valuables.
An unnamed source quoted by the newspaper described Fernandes and his wife, Ana Pinho, as âabsolutely devastated.â That description came from the source, rather than a public statement from the couple.
Detective Inspector David Jarvis said the investigation remained at an early stage and appealed for information from anyone who had noticed suspicious activity in the area.
âThis investigation is in its early stages at this time,â Jarvis said, in comments reported by talkSPORT.
The quoted police statement did not identify the suspects, disclose the total value of the stolen belongings or explain how entry was gained.
Although some reports described the burglary as happening during the match, accounts differ on its timing in relation to the final whistle. Fernandes was away in Italy when it occurred; the 8.30pm police call does not establish exactly when the intruders entered.
The break-in followed a difficult evening on the pitch. Unitedâs defeat by Cesc FĂ bregasâ Como extended their winless run to seven matches, and Fernandes questioned the teamâs tactical approach afterwards.
The Press Association reported that United were not expected to discipline him over the interview. His comments concerned the coaching staffâs decision against pressing opponents man-to-man.
Background: footballersâ homes targeted in Cheshire
Fernandes, 32, joined United from Sporting in January 2020. The Portugal international has become a central figure at Old Trafford, leading the team in major finals and passing 100 goals for the club, according to his official Manchester United profile.
His home is in a part of Cheshire popular with Premier League players. Another high-profile burglary occurred nearby in January, when Manchester City defender RĂșben Dias and television presenter Maya Jama had their Alderley Edge home broken into.
ITV News reported that both were away: Jama was filming in South Africa, while Dias was in Manchester for a Champions League fixture. Police confirmed that items had been stolen.
Those earlier incidents provide background to concerns about footballersâ home security. They do not establish a connection to the burglary at Fernandesâ property, where investigators are working to identify those responsible.
