BROOKLYN, New York, October 30, 2026 — New York City police are investigating after a man’s body was discovered inside a garbage bag on a street in Canarsie, Brooklyn, on Friday morning. The discovery, made near East 93rd Street and Avenue L shortly after 9:20 a.m., prompted a large police response and temporary road closures as detectives worked to establish how the man died and why his body was left there.
According to ABC7 New York, the bag containing the body was found beside a green garbage can at the intersection. The deceased man had not been identified as of Friday afternoon, and his cause of death remained unknown.
How Was the Body Discovered in Brooklyn?
The New York Post, citing law enforcement sources, reported that a homeless man searching for scrap metal initially came across the garbage bag outside a church in Canarsie.
According to the New York Post report, the man moved the bag to the corner of East 93rd Street and Avenue L before opening it and discovering human remains. The bag reportedly also contained wires and pieces of scrap metal.
New York City sanitation workers subsequently called 911, the newspaper reported. Police have not independently confirmed the complete sequence of events or publicly identified the person who first discovered the body.
Officers from the NYPD’s 69th Precinct responded to the location after receiving a report of a person requiring assistance. Emergency medical personnel confirmed the man was dead at the scene, according to amNewYork.
NYPD Closes Avenue L as Detectives Investigate
Investigators secured the surrounding streets with police tape while detectives examined the location. ABC7 reported that Avenue L remained closed between East 92nd and East 95th streets as of noon Friday.
Detectives from Patrol Borough Brooklyn South took the lead in the investigation, according to amNewYork. The man’s body was transferred to New York City’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
The medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of death. Authorities have not established whether the man died at the location or whether his body was brought there afterward.
Police had announced no arrests as of Friday afternoon. No suspected motive or connection to another investigation had been publicly established.
The discovery comes weeks after a separate NYPD investigation involving an accidental firearm discharge at a Brooklyn subway station. That September incident was unrelated to Friday’s discovery in Canarsie.
