America’s Got Talent Judges’ Callback 2026: New Format, Acts and Air Dates

America’s Got Talent is changing how contestants reach the Season 21 live shows. The first-ever Judges’ Callback round gives 23 selected acts another performance before Simon Cowell, Mel B, Howie Mandel and Sofía Vergara complete the live-show lineup.

The callbacks air on August 4 and August 11, 2026, with six celebrity guests helping the regular judges. Unlike a standard theater audition, each group performs in a smaller location selected by its judge.

The numbers behind AGT’s new round

Season 21 already has 28 acts moving forward, including contestants protected by Golden Buzzers. The callbacks will fill the remaining 16 places, meaning seven of the 23 returning acts will be eliminated.

The format brings a previously private selection process on camera. Cowell explained that the judges could begin with roughly 120 successful auditionees before repeatedly reviewing recordings to reduce the field to around 40.

Callbacks leave the familiar audition theater

Contestants did not return to AGT’s main stage. Cowell welcomed his group to his Malibu home, while Mel B held her sessions in her hometown of Leeds. Vergara’s callback was arranged in Beverly Hills, and Mandel used locations including his studio and the Laugh Factory.

The less formal settings give judges more time to observe contestants. Cowell said spending an entire day with the performers helped him learn considerably more about them than was possible during their brief initial appearances.

It can affect performances differently. Singers and close-up magicians may benefit from the intimacy, while dance groups accustomed to a large stage must adapt their presentation to a smaller space.

Six celebrity guests help assess the acts

Cowell is joined by former Fifth Harmony singer Normani and producer-songwriter Poo Bear. Normani’s appearance creates a reunion more than a decade after she auditioned for Cowell’s The X Factor USA in 2012.

Although eliminated as a solo contestant, Normani returned to join Ally Brooke, Lauren Jauregui, Dinah Jane and Camila Cabello in Fifth Harmony. Her experience gives her an understanding of both sides of a televised talent competition.

Mel B reunites with fellow Spice Girl Emma Bunton. Comedian Nikki Glaser assists Mandel, while singer Sebastián Yatra and entertainer Lele Pons join Vergara.

Sofía Vergara: Brook Lynn, Darrell Moten, Kameron Marshall, Olivia Befus and Vahtang.

Howie Mandel: Bird and Byron, Cris Sosa, Daniel Alvarez, Naimana & Daniele, Nene Royal and Rynia Kando.

The field spans singers, dancers, comedians, magicians, mentalists, musicians, ventriloquists, a beatboxer, an impressionist, a variety performer and a dog trainer.

Sando and Rynia Kando previously advanced during the AGT Season 21 Episode 2 auditions, where regular yes-vote contestants followed a different route from Golden Buzzer recipients.

AGT callback dates, time and streaming

Cowell and Mel B’s groups appear Tuesday, August 4. Mandel and Vergara’s contestants follow Tuesday, August 11. Both episodes air at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC and stream on Peacock the following day.

The live competition starts August 18. Season 21 originally premiered June 2 alongside other programs listed in the June 2026 reality TV schedule.

Why the second performance matters

A successful first audition may benefit from surprise, an ideal song choice or an enthusiastic theater audience. The callback asks whether an act can produce the same impact after expectations have increased.

Singers require another effective selection, comedians need fresh material and magicians must avoid repeating the same presentation. Judges can consider preparation, improvement and consistency rather than relying on one appearance.

The change gives contestants an opportunity to respond to earlier feedback, but it creates another elimination point before audience voting begins. For viewers, the main benefit is transparency: they can now see part of the decision-making that determines why some successful auditionees reach the live stage while others do not.
