The Canadian Football League has handed down a significant suspension to Saskatchewan Roughriders receiver Ajou Ajou, marking one of the leagueâs strongest disciplinary actions in recent years. The 24-year-old wide receiver has been suspended for all 2026 preseason games and no fewer than six regular-season games following a violation of the CFLâs Gender-Based Violence and Harassment Policy.
The decision follows a detailed third-party investigation launched in late January after multiple allegations surfaced. According to league findings, the incident dates back to November 18, 2025, when Ajou engaged in aggressive and unwelcome physical contact involving several women at a restaurant in Regina.
League Investigation and Findings
The CFL confirmed that the investigation included interviews with Ajou, multiple complainants, and witnesses. The findings concluded that the actions breached the leagueâs strict conduct standards, which apply to both on-field and off-field behavior.
Commissioner Stewart Johnston emphasized the leagueâs stance, stating that player conduct must reflect integrity and respect at all times. The league reiterated that maintaining the safety and well-being of communities remains a non-negotiable priority.
The CFLâs policy covers a wide range of behaviors, including physical and sexual misconduct, verbal abuse, and coercive actions. The league also reinforced its zero-tolerance approach, regardless of whether incidents occur in public or private settings.
Immediate Impact: Roughriders Release Ajou
Shortly after the suspension was announced, the Saskatchewan Roughriders confirmed that Ajou Ajou had been released from the team. The move reflects the organizationâs internal standards and its response to the findings.
General manager Jeremy OâDay stated that the playerâs actions did not align with the teamâs values, which emphasize respect, accountability, and professionalism. The franchise made it clear that maintaining those standards is central to its culture.
Ajou, a native of Alberta, had appeared in 20 games over two seasons and was part of the Roughriders squad that secured a 25â17 Grey Cup victory last November. His departure leaves a gap in the teamâs receiving lineup ahead of the upcoming season.
Reinstatement Conditions and Next Steps
The suspension is not fixed at six games, as the CFL has outlined a structured reinstatement process. Ajou must complete a minimum of 15 mandatory counselling sessions with a gender-based violence specialist. In addition, he will undergo a psychological assessment conducted by an independent expert and must meet directly with the Commissioner.
Only after successfully completing all requirements will he be eligible for reinstatement. The league has also stated that failure to meet these conditions could result in further disciplinary action.
The CFL continues to mandate annual training for all players and staff, including education on harassment, conduct policies, concussion protocols, and integrity-related issues such as match manipulation.
As outlined in the leagueâs official conduct framework, available through the Canadian Football Leagueâs policy guidelines, these measures are designed to ensure accountability and reinforce expectations across the sport.
The situation serves as a reminder of the growing emphasis on professional accountability in modern sports, where off-field behavior is increasingly scrutinized alongside performance. For teams and leagues alike, maintaining public trust has become as critical as success on the field.
