A chartered Cessna 441 carrying eight people crashed near the remote Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site in western Alaska on Thursday, August 20, killing everyone aboard. Federal investigators now say the pilots were unable to see the ground because of poor visibility shortly before the aircraft crashed during a second landing attempt.
The aircraft had departed Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport at about 9:15 a.m. and crashed shortly after noon local time near Cape Newenham. The National Transportation Safety Board said the flight was carrying two pilots, two members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and four contractors.
Pilots could not see the ground before crash
New preliminary information from the NTSB provides a clearer picture of the aircraft’s final approach. Clint Johnson, chief of the NTSB’s Alaska office, said weather conditions prevented the pilots from seeing the ground, forcing them to navigate solely using the aircraft’s instruments.
The crew initially attempted to land at Cape Newenham but abandoned the first approach after failing to establish visual contact with the ground. The aircraft crashed while making a second attempt to land.
The NTSB said the Cessna came down in steep, mountainous terrain about a quarter-mile from the airport runway. Investigators have stressed that the information remains preliminary and have not determined the probable cause of the accident.
All eight people aboard were killed
Authorities have now confirmed that all eight occupants died in the crash. The aircraft carried two pilots, two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers personnel and four contractors.
The pilots worked for Security Aviation, an Anchorage-based charter operator that specializes in flights to remote destinations across Alaska. The identities of the victims were not immediately released while authorities worked to notify their families.
The tragedy comes amid heightened attention on aviation safety following other recent incidents, including the American Airlines Flight 386 tire emergency at Chicago O’Hare, where the aircraft landed safely with emergency crews standing by.
Aircraft was on a civilian-contracted mission
Alaskan Command described the Cessna as a civilian-contracted aircraft and said the people aboard were carrying out a mission at the time of the accident. Officials had not publicly disclosed the specific purpose of that mission in the latest information available.
Cape Newenham is home to a long-range radar installation in a remote section of Alaska’s Bering Sea coast. The site forms part of a network used to monitor aircraft operating in Alaskan airspace and near its borders.
Lt. Gen. Robert Davis, commander of Alaskan Command, the Alaskan North American Aerospace Defense Command Region and Eleventh Air Force, described the deaths as a devastating loss and said support for the victims’ families, friends and colleagues was the immediate priority.
Wreckage highly fragmented after post-crash fire
Investigators face significant challenges because of both the condition of the aircraft and the remote terrain. NTSB officials described the wreckage as highly fragmented and confirmed that a fire occurred after the crash.
Recovery crews planned to reach the site by helicopter so the wreckage could be recovered and examined. The steep mountainous location is expected to complicate access and evidence recovery.
Those challenges are particularly significant in remote Alaska, where aircraft frequently connect communities, government facilities and work sites that have little or no practical road access.
Security Aviation responds to fatal crash
Security Aviation said it was heartbroken by the accident involving one of its aircraft and expressed sympathy for everyone affected. The company also acknowledged messages of support received from communities across Alaska.
Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski had earlier identified Security Aviation as the operator and thanked the agencies involved in the emergency response. The company specializes in transporting passengers to remote locations throughout the state.
The accident differs from emergencies where crews are able to return safely to a major airport. In another recent incident, a Jet2 Boeing 737 made an emergency diversion to Manchester following a suspected bird strike.
NTSB and FAA investigating the cause
The NTSB and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the accident. The NTSB’s official investigation process involves gathering and analysing evidence before determining a probable cause.
Investigators are expected to examine the wreckage, weather conditions, flight information, pilot records, aircraft maintenance history and other evidence that could help reconstruct the final minutes of the flight.
The inability of the pilots to see the ground is now an important part of the preliminary sequence of events, but it does not by itself establish why the aircraft crashed. Investigators have not yet determined whether weather, operational decisions, mechanical factors or a combination of circumstances contributed to the accident.
