Alberta $100 Energy Rebate 2026: Who Qualifies, Payment Date and How to Apply

Eligible Alberta residents can apply for the province’s one-time $100 Energy Rebate until September 30, 2026. Approved payments are delivered electronically, generally within 14 days of submitting a complete application.

The rebate is intended to help residents with groceries, fuel, utilities and other everyday costs. It replaces the Fuel Tax Relief Program that had been scheduled to begin on July 1.

Who qualifies for the Alberta $100 rebate?

Applicants must have been at least 18 years old on July 1, 2026, live in Alberta and have filed a 2025 income tax return. Their household income must be $225,000 or less.

For this program, a household means one person or two people who are married or in a common-law relationship. Roommates, adult children and other relatives sharing an address are treated as separate households when they are not married or common-law.

Each eligible adult must apply separately. A qualifying couple could therefore receive a combined total of $200 after both applications are approved.

How is household income calculated?

The province uses information reported to the Canada Revenue Agency on the applicant’s 2025 tax return and, where applicable, their spouse or common-law partner’s return.

The calculation starts with total income on line 15000. Eligible split-pension amounts, tuition expenses and specified medical expenses are then deducted under the program rules.

How to apply before the deadline

Applications must be completed through the official Alberta Energy Rebate portal. The application window closes on September 30, 2026.

Residents need a verified Alberta.ca Account and must ensure the address on their Alberta driver’s licence or identification card matches their account information.

Applicants must provide their Social Insurance Number. Married or common-law residents also need their partner’s SIN, date of birth and legal name exactly as reported on the 2025 tax return.

An application can be paused and resumed later because progress is saved automatically. However, information cannot be changed after the form has been submitted.

When will the $100 payment arrive?

The government advises applicants to allow up to 14 days for review and delivery. Payments are sent electronically through one of Interac’s verification services rather than as a credit on an electricity or gas bill.

Customers of participating financial institutions can use Interac Verification Service to arrange a direct electronic payment. Alberta says it does not receive the applicant’s online banking login information.

People whose bank is not listed, or who do not want to use direct bank verification, can select the document-verification option. Their payment will be issued by e-Transfer to the verified email address attached to their Alberta.ca Account.

What should you do if the payment is delayed?

Applicants should first allow the full 14-day processing period and check the inbox and spam folder linked to their verified account.

Address differences, incomplete spouse information or details that do not match tax records may require additional review. Residents should not submit another application while an existing one is still being assessed.

They should also avoid unofficial websites, texts or emails requesting personal and banking details. Applications should only be submitted through Alberta’s government portal.

Who receives the rebate automatically?

People receiving the Alberta Seniors Benefit, Income Support, Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped or the Alberta Disability Assistance Program were automatically enrolled if they were clients on July 1.

Residents joining one of these programs after July 1 must submit an online rebate application instead of waiting for automatic enrolment.

Is the Alberta Energy Rebate taxable?

The $100 rebate is non-taxable, does not need to be reported as income and will not reduce other provincial or federal benefit payments.

Because it is a direct payment, recipients can decide how to use it. Other household-support schemes follow different rules, including the Origin Energy $60 refund eligibility and payment schedule, which has its own qualifying conditions and payment timeline.

Why was fuel-tax relief replaced?

Alberta says the rebate provides more flexibility because it is available to eligible adults whether or not they drive. The province estimates the $100 payment offers 50% more support per person than the average fuel-tax saving expected over three months.

Affordability concerns are also affecting older households elsewhere, with projected Social Security reductions potentially costing retired couples thousands of dollars a year if long-term funding problems are not addressed.
