Alberta $100 Energy Rebate Applications Now Open: Check Eligibility and How to Apply

Applications for Alberta’s $100 Energy Rebate are now open, giving eligible residents access to a one-time payment meant to help with higher living costs. The online portal opened on July 1, 2026, after the Alberta government chose direct payments instead of reducing gasoline taxes at the pumps.

Premier Danielle Smith announced the rebate on June 17, saying the payment would reach more people because it is available to eligible Albertans whether they drive or not. The province estimates nearly 3.4 million adults could qualify.

Who is eligible for the Alberta $100 Energy Rebate?

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, live in Alberta, have a verified Alberta.ca account, have filed a 2025 tax return, and have a household income of $225,000 or less.

For this rebate, a household means one individual or two people who are married or living in a common-law relationship. Adults at the same address who are not married or common law are treated as separate households, so each eligible adult must apply separately.

Albertans receiving the Alberta Seniors Benefit, AISH, Alberta Disability Assistance Program or Income Support as of July 1 are automatically enrolled and generally do not need to apply.

How to apply online

Applications are open from July 1 to September 30, 2026. Eligible residents must sign in with a verified Alberta.ca account, confirm their details, and submit the application through the secure online portal.

Official eligibility rules and application instructions are available on the Government of Alberta Energy Rebate page.

The province says most applicants can create a verified Alberta.ca account in under two minutes. Residents with limited access to a computer or email are encouraged to ask a trusted friend or family member for help.

When will payments arrive?

The government expects approved payments to arrive within about 14 days after an application is received. Payments will be sent through Interac e-Transfer.

Anyone without e-transfer access should speak with their bank before applying. The rebate is non-taxable and will not affect eligibility for provincial or federal benefit programs.

Why Alberta chose a rebate instead of fuel tax relief

The $100 payment replaces the planned 13-cent-per-litre fuel tax relief that would have taken effect after West Texas Intermediate crude exceeded Alberta’s US$90 threshold during its review period.

The province officially changed its fuel tax relief regulations to make the payment possible. Finance Minister Jason Nixon said the rebate provides about 50% more savings to the average Albertan than the fuel tax cut would have delivered over three months.

The decision also comes as Alberta’s treasury has benefited from stronger oil prices linked to global instability involving the United States, Israel and Iran.

Portal issues reported after launch

Some applicants reported problems on opening day, including login delays, verification issues and difficulty accessing the portal. The province said it was aware of performance issues and confirmed heavy traffic was the cause.

Officials said new functionality was added to support the Alberta Energy Rebate Portal and that technical teams would continue monitoring the website.

Eligible Albertans have until September 30, 2026 to apply, so residents facing delays should wait and try again through the official portal rather than making repeated attempts.
