Apple Music Could Launch a Lower-Cost Subscription Tier Following Android Beta Discovery

Apple Music has raised its subscription prices while leaving an important question unanswered: is a cheaper, limited-access plan still under consideration? Code found in an Android beta in May 2026 pointed to possible listening restrictions, but Apple had not announced an additional tier as of July 31.

The discovery came from Aaron Perris, a developer and technology researcher who examines unreleased software features. Perris identified references to “Premium access required” and a message shown when an account could not skip more tracks.

What the Android beta code revealed

The wording was found inside a test version of Apple Music for Android. A limit on track skips would be unusual for Apple Music’s existing subscriptions because paying members can choose songs and skip tracks without that type of restriction.

However, the code does not prove that Apple is preparing a budget subscription. Perris noted that the messages could relate to another feature, including Apple Music radio. Companies routinely test language and unfinished functions that may be changed or removed before a public release.

Apple has not confirmed a free plan, a cheaper paid option, a launch date or a list of restricted features. No new tier was introduced alongside the company’s major software announcements in June, making it important to treat the beta references as evidence of testing rather than a confirmed product.

Apple Music prices increased in July 2026

The speculation has become more relevant following Apple’s first Apple Music price increase since October 2022. The company raised prices on July 17, 2026, citing higher music licensing costs.

In the United States, the Individual plan increased from $10.99 to $11.99 per month. The Family plan, which can be shared with up to five other people, rose from $16.99 to $19.99, while the Student plan moved from $5.99 to $6.99.

Prices increased in several other markets as well. The Individual plan now costs £11.99 in the United Kingdom and AU$14.99 in Australia. Actual charges depend on the subscriber’s country, taxes and eligibility.

Apple Music remains an ad-free service offering more than 100 million songs, offline downloads, Lossless Audio, Spatial Audio and access to Apple Music Classical. It is available across Apple devices as well as Android, Windows, supported televisions, game consoles and connected speakers.

What a lower-priced plan could restrict

If Apple turns the beta code into a commercial subscription, a lower price could be paired with limits on skipping tracks or selecting songs. Apple could also reserve offline downloads, higher audio quality, Lossless Audio or Spatial Audio for its standard plans.

Those possibilities have not been confirmed. The phrase “Premium access required” only indicates that Apple has prepared language capable of separating basic and premium access. It does not reveal whether the basic experience would be free, supported by advertising or sold at a reduced monthly price.

A restricted paid plan could offer Apple a way to attract cost-conscious customers following the July price increase without adopting Spotify’s advertising-supported model. Apple has explored other ways to make subscriptions easier to manage, including an annual subscription option paid in monthly instalments.

Why a free Apple Music tier remains uncertain

Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Music, Sports and Beats, argued against free music streaming during an April 2026 interview with Billboard. He said Apple was proud that its music service did not rely on a free tier and linked paid access to the value of work created by artists and songwriters.

That position makes a fully free, advertising-supported service appear less consistent with Apple’s stated strategy. A limited paid plan, a radio-related restriction or a regional experiment would fit the available evidence more closely, although none has been verified by the company.

Spotify follows a different model, using free access as an entry point before encouraging customers to subscribe. Its free service includes advertising and certain playback limits, while Premium provides more control and additional features.

Apple has tried a cheaper plan before

Apple introduced the Voice Plan in 2021 as a lower-priced subscription controlled mainly through Siri. It did not include several features available with the standard plan, such as offline downloads, lyrics and Spatial Audio.

The Voice Plan was discontinued in November 2023. Its short life demonstrated the difficulty of removing features without making a cheaper subscription feel inconvenient. Any replacement would need to provide enough control to appeal to casual listeners while preserving a clear reason to choose the Individual plan.

What subscribers should know

Existing customers should check their renewal notice or subscription settings for the price applying in their region. They can separately review what to do during an Apple service or streaming outage if an app stops loading, rejects a sign-in or unexpectedly requests another subscription.

The Android beta discovery does not change any current plan, and customers do not need to take action because of the code references. As of July 31, Apple continues to advertise Individual, Family and Student memberships alongside Apple One bundles.

Until Apple makes an official announcement, claims that a free or budget Apple Music tier is launching should be treated as speculation.
