Australia and New Zealand will meet once again in the Perth Sevens final after the Australians powered past the United States 26–5 in Sunday’s semi-final.
It’s another familiar chapter in the trans-Tasman rivalry, with the two sides now set to face off in a decider for the fourth time in four events.
Australia took control from the opening minute through Maddison Levi, who beat three defenders and sprinted 80 metres for a stunning solo try to spark the hosts into action.
The USA kept the pressure on in what became a tough, dogged first half, but Australia’s defence held firm and the lead grew after the break.
Heidi Dennis crossed in the corner to continue her strong tournament, before Madison Ashby jumped on an intercept to push the advantage out to 19–0.
America finally hit back through Su Adegoke, but Australia answered quickly. A crisp cut-out from Tia Hinds released Levi for her second try of the match, putting the result beyond doubt and sending the home crowd into celebration.
After full-time, Hinds pointed to the brutal conditions and praised Australia’s defensive effort in the heat, saying the team had been able to adapt well after a hot Australian summer.
She also acknowledged the challenge ahead, noting New Zealand’s ability to bring out Australia’s best whenever the rivals collide.
New Zealand booked their spot earlier in the day after a hard-fought win over France, having trailed 14–5 early. The influence of Jorja Miller helped steer the Black Ferns Sevens home as they chase back-to-back titles following their Singapore success last week.
Australia coach Tim Walsh will be hoping Ashby clears an HIA ahead of the final after she was forced off in the second half. She passed the initial assessment but must clear the next test before the decider.
Semi-final result: Australia 26 (Tries: M. Levi 2, Dennis, Ashby; Cons: T. Levi 2, Hinds) defeated USA 5.
