Sydney’s Northern Beaches is about to get Australia’s largest Bunnings Warehouse — a five-storey “mega-store” promising a new kind of hardware shopping experience.

Australia’s biggest ever will open next week in Frenchs Forest, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, marking a first for the retailer and a major shift in how hardware stores are built in dense urban areas.
The new site is also the only Bunnings in the country to rise across five storeys — with three levels of retail stacked above a two-level car park. Inside, shoppers will navigate roughly 101 aisles, making this the most expansive Bunnings layout in Australia.
A vertical “mega-shed”
Instead of sprawling out across land, the Frenchs Forest store goes vertical. The result is what Bunnings describes as a full-service hardware and home-improvement hub built upwards rather than outwards — complete with lifts for trolleys and wide access points between floors for bulky purchases.
Shoppers can expect the familiar Bunnings experience at triple scale, including:
- A dedicated trade floor for professional builders and renovators
- An in-store tile shop with flooring and accessories
- Expanded garden and outdoor living sections
- More space for tools, timber, paint and seasonal lines
Jobs, crowds — and local impact
Bunnings says the new store will create around 120 jobs across retail, trade and operations. But experts warn that a store of this scale could also put pressure on smaller independent hardware businesses in the area.
Local planning authorities have also had traffic in mind. As part of approvals, the retailer agreed to install traffic lights and reduce signage size to ease congestion concerns around the busy Northern Beaches site.
Opening day expectations
Management has confirmed that the Frenchs Forest store will open next week, with the usual Bunnings fan-fare expected — including the sausage sizzle. Early visitors should expect busy car parks, crowded aisles and opening-week promotions as the store launches.
For shoppers mapping out a weekend around the launch, it may be worth pairing the visit with a local event or coastal getaway. You may also enjoy our guide to the Queenscliff Music Festival 2025 dates and venue .
