Marvel Studios has put the first major pieces of its new X-Men movie in place, revealing a cast led by Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier. The announcement gives the Marvel Cinematic Universe a clearer foundation for its next generation of mutants.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige introduced the lineup at Disney’s D23 event in Anaheim, California, in August 2026. Adam Driver will play Nathaniel Milbury, a name connected in Marvel Comics to Nathaniel Essex, better known as Mister Sinister.
Sadie Sink is Jean Grey, Kit Connor is Scott Summers/Cyclops, Samara Weaving is Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette is Rogue and Maya Boyd is Ororo Munroe/Storm. Thunderbolts* filmmaker Jake Schreier is directing, with the movie scheduled for May 5, 2028.
Christopher Abbott takes over as Professor X
Abbott becomes the latest actor to play Charles Xavier, the powerful telepath and traditional founder of the X-Men. Patrick Stewart established the role in 2000’s X-Men, while James McAvoy portrayed a younger Xavier across Fox’s later prequel films.
Marvel is introducing Abbott while still using several actors from the Fox era. Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Rebecca Romijn and Alan Cumming are among the returning mutant stars connected to Avengers: Doomsday.
That creates an unusual generational crossover. James Marsden’s return as Cyclops in Avengers: Doomsday brings the veteran Scott Summers back before Connor becomes Marvel’s new Cyclops in 2028.
Adam Driver brings Mister Sinister into focus
Driver’s casting points toward a different conflict from the Xavier-versus-Magneto rivalry that shaped several previous X-Men movies.
Nathaniel Essex, or Mister Sinister, is a longtime Marvel Comics villain associated with genetics, experimentation and manipulation of mutants. He also has extensive comic history involving Cyclops and Jean Grey, although Marvel has not confirmed that the film will adapt any specific storyline.
Magneto, Wolverine, Mystique, Beast, Iceman and Gambit were not part of the first announced roster. That does not mean they have been ruled out; Marvel has not presented the initial cast as the complete lineup.
The new X-Men roster offers Marvel a different team dynamic
The confirmed characters bring together several major figures from X-Men history. Xavier traditionally serves as the team’s founder, while Cyclops has frequently been its field leader. Jean Grey and Storm have similarly held central positions across decades of comics.
Emma Frost provides a less predictable element. The telepath has been portrayed as an enemy, ally, teacher and X-Men member at different points in Marvel Comics, giving the filmmakers room for conflict inside the group.
Cyclops is receiving renewed attention elsewhere in Marvel’s wider lineup as well. Cyclops’ expanding presence in Marvel Rivals comes as Marvel prepares a new live-action version of the character for the MCU.

Jake Schreier faces a bigger MCU challenge
Schreier is directing after working with Marvel Studios on Thunderbolts*. Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and writer-producer Joanna Calo have worked on the screenplay following an earlier draft by Michael Lesslie.
The reboot has more to establish than a typical solo superhero movie. It must introduce several characters, develop their relationships and explain where mutants fit into a universe already populated by the Avengers, Fantastic Four and other enhanced heroes.
Marvel has not yet explained how widespread mutants will be when the film begins or how the new team connects to the multiverse storyline surrounding the current Avengers movies.

Marvel is moving beyond the Fox X-Men era
The new film will be the first main X-Men team movie since Dark Phoenix arrived in 2019. Fox’s mutant era effectively concluded with The New Mutants in 2020 after Disney completed its acquisition of most of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets in 2019.
Marvel Studios has since introduced mutant characters and references gradually instead of immediately rebooting the franchise.
The 2028 project now has a defined foundation: Abbott’s Professor X, Connor’s Cyclops, Sink’s Jean Grey, Boyd’s Storm, Navarrette’s Rogue and Weaving’s Emma Frost form the announced team, while Driver’s character provides its first major villain connection.
Questions remain around Wolverine, Magneto and the relationship between Marvel’s legacy mutants and this younger cast. But with a director, writers, core ensemble and May 5, 2028 release date in place, Marvel’s new X-Men era is beginning to take a much more concrete shape.
