CU Boulder Student Killed, Another Critical in Halloween Party Shooting

BOULDER, Colorado, November 1, 2026 — A 19-year-old University of Colorado Boulder student was killed and another student of the same age remained critically injured after a shooting inside a University Hill home late on Halloween, police said.

Officers responded at approximately 11:28 p.m. Saturday to the 700 block of Marine Street. They arrived in less than two minutes and found two men with gunshot wounds. Both were hospitalized, and one died early Sunday, according to Boulder Police’s statement.

Police had shut down a large party

Earlier that evening, officers visited the house following a noise complaint and issued a nuisance-party citation. Hundreds of attendees left, while a smaller group remained.

Officers had first attended the registered house party at around 10 p.m., when a live band was playing and hundreds of people were gathered. The shooting was reported more than an hour after police intervened and the gathering began to disperse.

Detectives believe a group later tried to force its way inside. A scuffle was followed by gunfire that struck the two students, police said.

At Sunday’s news conference, officials said the gathering had been registered through a joint CU Boulder–Boulder Police program that allows hosts to receive warnings about noise complaints. Organizers complied with instructions to end the party, Boulder Reporting Lab reported.

Officials said they were unaware of a formal university affiliation with the gathering, including any fraternity connection. Police Chief Stephen Redfearn described the killing as Boulder’s first homicide of 2026.

Investigators seek two persons of interest

Detectives interviewed approximately 20 witnesses and released photographs and video showing two persons of interest. Police are also seeking other witnesses.

Authorities have not said either person pictured fired the shots. Neither victim’s name had been released in the statements reviewed; the coroner will identify the student who died.

“Our community deserves to feel safe, and we will not accept this kind of violence in Boulder,” Redfearn said.

CU Boulder Police Chief Ashley Griffin said Dean of Students Devin Cramer had contacted students directly affected by the shooting. University support services were available to the wider student community.

Boulder Police and CU Police announced additional patrols around University Hill. The university also activated support services, including its Office of Victim Assistance, available at 303-492-8855.

Anyone with information should call 303-441-3333 and reference case 26-10148. Photographs and footage can be submitted through the police evidence portal.
