Haotong Li Overcomes Health Scare to Deliver 69 at Augusta National

Augusta National has tested the world’s best golfers this week, but for Haotong Li, the challenge has gone far beyond the fairways and greens.

The Chinese golfer delivered a composed second-round 69 on Friday, building on his opening 71 to sit tied for seventh after 36 holes at the Masters. At four-under overall, he remains within striking distance, though eight shots behind leader Rory McIlroy, but the numbers only tell part of the story.

Behind the steady scorecard was a far more difficult battle — one that unfolded away from the spotlight.

A difficult night before a strong round

Li revealed after his round that he had been dealing with severe stomach issues leading into Friday’s play. The discomfort was intense enough to disrupt his preparation and leave him uncertain whether he would even complete the round.

He described a restless night and lingering symptoms that followed him onto the course, saying he felt drained, nauseous, and lacking energy. Practice was minimal, and expectations were low.

Instead of targeting a full round, Li admitted he planned to take it hole by hole, prepared to withdraw if his condition worsened.

Simply finishing became the first goal.

Momentum builds late at Augusta

Early signs did little to suggest a turnaround. After a birdie at the second, Li dropped shots at the fourth and seventh, appearing to settle into a cautious rhythm.

Then came a surge that changed everything.

At the par-5 13th, he narrowly avoided Rae’s Creek to set up a birdie. On the 14th, he nearly holed out for eagle before tapping in for another gain. He continued the charge with a precise pitch at the 15th, leaving himself just a couple of feet, and followed that with a near ace on the 16th.

In the space of a few holes, Li transformed his round — and his position on the leaderboard.

It was a stretch defined not just by skill, but resilience.

Augusta’s stage lifts the moment

By the time he signed his scorecard, the physical discomfort had eased slightly, replaced by a sense of relief and accomplishment. The turnaround raised a natural question: had the moment itself helped him push through?

Li’s response was simple and telling — the stage of a major championship had given him a lift.

The Masters, with all its pressure and prestige, had become an unlikely source of energy during one of his toughest days on the course.

As the tournament heads into the weekend, Li’s position inside the top 10 keeps him firmly in contention. While the leaderboard remains led by McIlroy, Li’s performance stands out for reasons that go beyond numbers — a reminder that sometimes the toughest opponents aren’t listed on the scoreboard.

For now, the focus shifts to recovery and momentum. At Augusta, both can change quickly, and Li has already shown he can handle more than most.
