Heatwaves can make everyday phone use harder, especially when a smartphone starts getting hot, slowing down or refusing to charge properly. With temperatures rising across parts of the UK and Europe, iPhone and Android users may need to change how they charge, carry and use their devices during extreme heat.
Smartphones are designed to protect themselves when temperatures climb too high. Apple says iPhone and iPad devices are designed for use where the ambient temperature is between 0°C and 35°C. Samsung gives the same optimal usage range for Galaxy devices and warns that charging or using a phone in extreme temperatures can accelerate battery deterioration.
That means a heatwave is not just uncomfortable for users. It can affect battery health, screen brightness, app performance and even whether the phone stays powered on.
Why Smartphones Overheat in Hot Weather
A smartphone creates heat whenever it works hard. Charging, gaming, video streaming, GPS navigation, AI tools, photography and photo editing all place demand on the processor, battery, modem and display.
During normal weather, the device can usually manage that heat. During a heatwave, the surrounding air is already hot, so the phone has less room to cool down naturally.
Most phones do not have large vents or fans. Instead, they release heat through the body of the device. If the phone is sitting in direct sunlight, inside a case or in a tight trouser pocket, that heat can build up faster.
What Happens When a Phone Gets Too Hot
When a phone detects unsafe heat, it may automatically change how it works. This can include dimming the screen, slowing performance, pausing charging, disabling some features or shutting down until the temperature drops.
The slowdown is often called thermal throttling. It means the phone’s chip reduces its speed to create less heat. This is why apps may feel slower or games may lag when the device becomes hot.
In more serious cases, the phone may show a temperature warning and become temporarily unusable. That can be frustrating, but it is a protection feature designed to prevent deeper damage.
1. Avoid Charging During the Hottest Part of the Day
Charging produces heat, even when the phone is working normally. During a heatwave, charging in the afternoon or while using the phone outdoors can make overheating more likely.
If possible, charge the device during cooler hours, such as early morning, evening or overnight. Keep it on a hard surface with airflow around it, not under a pillow, blanket or pile of clothes.
2. Use Slower Charging When You Can
Many modern phones support fast charging, and some Android models can reach very high charging speeds. The trade-off is heat. Faster charging pushes more power into the battery in less time, which can warm the device.
If you are not in a hurry, use a lower-wattage charger. The phone will charge more slowly, but it is likely to stay cooler.
3. Skip Wireless Charging on Very Hot Days
Wireless charging is convenient, but it can create extra heat because it transfers energy through electromagnetic induction rather than a direct cable connection.
If the phone and charging pad are not aligned properly, the charger may work harder and produce even more heat. On a hot day, a wired charger is usually the better choice.
4. Remove the Case If the Phone Feels Hot
Phone cases are useful for protection, but they can also act like insulation. Thick, rugged or leather-style cases may trap heat around the device.
If your phone feels unusually warm, remove the case for a short time while it cools. Do this indoors or in a safe place where the phone is less likely to be dropped.
5. Keep the Phone Away From Direct Sunlight
Direct sunlight can quickly raise the surface temperature of a phone. Glass and metal absorb heat, while the display and processor may already be producing their own warmth.
Do not leave your phone on a car dashboard, outdoor table, beach towel, windowsill or garden chair. Keep it in the shade or inside a bag instead.
6. Never Leave a Phone in a Hot Car
A parked car can heat up quickly, especially when sunlight hits the windows and dashboard. A phone left inside can become dangerously hot even if it is not being used.
If you are travelling during a heatwave, take your phone with you rather than leaving it in the vehicle. This is especially important if the phone is charging from a car port or power bank.
7. Avoid Heavy Apps Until the Phone Cools
Gaming is one of the biggest heat-producing activities on a smartphone because it uses the processor, graphics chip, screen and battery at the same time.
Other demanding tasks include AI features, GPS navigation, video recording, camera use, photo editing and high-quality video streaming. If the device feels hot, close these apps and give the phone a break.
8. Turn Down Screen Brightness
The screen is another major source of power use. In bright sunlight, phones may activate High Brightness Mode, which makes the display easier to see but also consumes more energy and creates more heat.
Lower the brightness manually when possible. Turning off auto-brightness during extreme heat can also stop the phone from pushing the display to maximum brightness outdoors.
9. Use Airplane Mode or Switch the Phone Off
Wireless connections can add to heat, especially when the phone is searching for signal in a weak coverage area. Airplane Mode turns off mobile data, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, reducing power use.
If the phone is already very warm, switching it off for a while is even better. Leave it in a shaded, cool place until it returns to a normal temperature.
10. Do Not Put an Overheated Phone in the Fridge
A fridge or freezer may seem like a quick solution, but sudden cooling can be risky. Rapid temperature changes may cause condensation to form inside the phone, which can damage internal components.
The safer method is gradual cooling. Remove the case, stop charging, keep the phone out of sunlight and place it near a normal fan if available. A fan can help move warm air away without exposing the device to extreme cold.
Signs Your Phone Needs Extra Attention
Occasional warmth during charging or gaming is common. However, repeated overheating during basic use may point to a battery or hardware problem.
Watch for warning signs such as unexpected shutdowns, charging that repeatedly stops, a swollen battery, unusual screen dimming, very slow performance or heat when the phone is idle.
If these problems continue after the weather cools, contact the manufacturer or an authorised repair provider before continuing heavy use.

Simple Habits That Protect Battery Health
Repeated exposure to high heat can shorten battery life over time. Apple warns that using or charging devices above 35°C can permanently reduce battery lifespan, while Samsung says extreme temperatures may accelerate battery deterioration.
To reduce risk, keep your phone shaded, avoid fast charging when it is already hot, use a cable instead of wireless charging in extreme heat, and avoid processor-heavy apps until the device cools.
