James Christopher Named Escambia and Santa Rosa Student of the Week, Wins 79.45% Vote

Pine Forest High School senior James Christopher has been named Escambia and Santa Rosa Student of the Week for April 6–10, securing a commanding 79.45% of the public vote in a weekly recognition program that continues to draw strong engagement from students and families across Northwest Florida.

The result, announced on April 13, placed Christopher well ahead of runner-up Chriszaven Jones of Pensacola High School, who received 20.19% of the vote. A new round of voting is set to begin on April 14, keeping the spotlight on student achievements across the region.

Christopher, a 12th-grade student, was nominated for his consistent academic performance and strong involvement in school leadership. Described by staff and peers as diligent, dedicated and highly motivated, he is a visible presence in student council activities and school events. Despite an active extracurricular schedule, he maintains A/B grades and is widely recognized for his time management skills and enthusiasm, often reflecting what his school community calls “Eagle Pride.”

Profiles highlight leadership, ambition and community impact

The weekly recognition also showcased a diverse group of nominees whose achievements extend beyond traditional academics. Chriszaven Jones, also a senior, stood out for his leadership on the varsity baseball team, where he serves as captain and ranks among the state’s top stolen base leaders. Alongside athletics, he has built a strong academic record and earned praise for his discipline and commitment in the Skilled Trades Building Technology program.

At Success Academy, ninth-grade student Dymond Carthon was nominated for her dedication to learning and strong organizational skills. Teachers described her as responsible and creative, noting her ability to bring fresh ideas into classroom discussions. Carthon has expressed an ambition to become a cosmetologist and hopes to use her future skills to support disadvantaged communities by offering free grooming services.

Escambia High School’s Madison Newton, an 11th-grade student, was recognized for balancing academic excellence with extensive community involvement. A standout musician in the band program, she also contributes to service initiatives through Girl Scouts, church activities and youth mentorship. Known for her leadership and consistency, Newton maintains a strong academic record while actively supporting her peers.

Community-driven recognition continues to grow

The Student of the Week program has become a regular feature that reflects both school pride and community participation. By combining public voting with detailed nominations, the initiative highlights not just academic success but also leadership, character and service — qualities that often define a student’s broader impact within their school.

Christopher’s decisive win underscores how visibility, consistency and involvement can resonate with voters in these contests. Students who contribute across multiple areas — from academics to extracurricular leadership — often build stronger community recognition, which plays a key role in the final outcome.

Programs like this continue to gain traction as local audiences seek more positive and community-focused education stories, a trend also reflected in broader coverage of student achievements and school initiatives across platforms such as The Guardian’s education section.

With a new week of nominations and voting about to begin, schools across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties will once again put forward students whose efforts in classrooms, teams and communities continue to shape the region’s education landscape.
