Jet2 Warns Birmingham to Madeira Flights Disrupted as Strong Winds Cause Chaos

Jet2 has issued a fresh warning to passengers travelling from Birmingham to Madeira after strong winds and dangerous weather conditions caused widespread disruption at the popular holiday island, leaving dozens of flights delayed, rescheduled or cancelled.

The airline confirmed that adverse weather at Madeira’s Funchal Airport is continuing to impact operations, with passengers urged to check for updates before heading to the airport. The situation has created uncertainty for both outbound UK travellers and those currently stranded on the island.

Madeira Airport, known for its challenging landing conditions, has been hit by powerful crosswinds and unstable weather over recent days. At one point, reports suggested that up to 40 flights were cancelled across arrivals and departures, highlighting the scale of disruption facing airlines and holidaymakers.

Jet2 Revises Birmingham Flight as Delays Hit UK Travellers

Jet2 confirmed that several flights have been affected, including the Birmingham to Madeira service, which has now been rescheduled. Flight LS1226 from Birmingham is expected to depart later in the evening at 8.35pm local time, following earlier disruption.

Other revised departures include flights to Manchester at 1pm, Bristol at 1.30pm, Bournemouth via London Stansted at 8.25pm, and Edinburgh via Leeds Bradford at 9.25pm, showing how widespread the disruption has become across the UK network.

The airline said its UK-based operations team is working continuously to minimise delays, but warned that safety remains the top priority. Passengers currently in Madeira awaiting return flights have been contacted directly with updated travel details via SMS and email.

Jet2 said: “We are aware of adverse weather conditions currently affecting Madeira (Funchal). Our UK-based operations team are working hard to minimise any disruption to flights. Safety is our number one priority and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Travellers have been advised to check their flight status online and avoid travelling to the airport unless they have received confirmation of their updated departure time.

Weather Warnings and Huge Waves Add to Travel Chaos

The disruption comes as Portugal’s national weather agency issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds across Madeira. Authorities have also warned of a coastal event, with waves expected to reach heights of 4 to 4.5 metres between Sunday evening and early Monday morning.

These extreme conditions have made landings particularly difficult at Funchal Airport, where aircraft must navigate a short runway and strong Atlantic crosswinds. Earlier in the week, no planes were able to land for several hours due to the severity of the winds, underlining the risks pilots face in such conditions.

Despite some improvement at times, the weather remains unpredictable. A few flights have managed to land during calmer periods, offering some hope to waiting passengers, but delays and diversions are expected to continue over the coming days.

Airlines including British Airways and easyJet are also monitoring the situation closely, with some flights operating on time while others face disruption depending on weather conditions at the time of landing.

Passengers travelling to Madeira are being urged to stay updated using official sources and airline communications. Real-time weather alerts and warnings can be checked via the Portuguese weather service (IPMA), which continues to monitor wind and sea conditions around the island.

For now, Jet2 passengers flying from Birmingham and other UK airports should prepare for potential delays, allow extra time for travel, and remain flexible with their plans as the situation develops.

While airlines are working to restore normal schedules, the ongoing strong winds and coastal warnings mean disruption could persist, leaving many holidaymakers facing a stressful start — or end — to their trips to Madeira.
