Pilot Suffers Medical Emergency Mid-Flight, Jet2 Plane Forced Into Emergency Landing in Portugal

A Jet2 flight from Tenerife to Birmingham was diverted to Portugal after a pilot became unwell in the cockpit, forcing the aircraft to make an emergency landing in the early hours of Friday morning.

The flight, LS1266, left Tenerife South Airport at about 11:17 p.m. local time on Thursday, May 21, before changing course more than three hours into the journey. Instead of continuing to Birmingham, the aircraft landed at Porto Airport at around 2:11 a.m. on Friday, May 22.

Jet2 confirmed that the diversion was made after “one of the pilots” began feeling unwell. The airline said the aircraft landed safely and stressed that passengers were not put at risk.

“At no point was safety compromised, and customers subsequently continued their journey,” Jet2 said in a statement reported by People. The airline also apologized to travelers for the unexpected delay.

Inside the cabin, however, passengers described a worrying scene as crew members moved through the aircraft looking for medical help. Several passengers said flight attendants asked whether anyone onboard was medically trained and able to assist with an emergency involving the cockpit crew.

One traveler said they had been asleep when the situation suddenly changed. Cabin lights began flashing, crew members appeared distressed, and passengers quickly realized the aircraft was no longer following a normal route to the UK.

The descent into Porto added to the anxiety for families onboard. A passenger said their 2-year-old child began crying as the plane dropped quickly for the emergency landing, while other children were also upset during the sudden change in altitude.

Emergency crews were waiting when the aircraft arrived in Portugal. Medical staff reportedly boarded the plane after landing, and the unwell pilot was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. One passenger claimed they were later told the pilot had suffered a heart attack, but Jet2 has not confirmed the exact medical condition.

Jet2 also responded to a customer query on X by saying the delay was due to “unforeseen operational reasons,” though the airline did not provide further public details in that message.

Why the Jet2 Flight Diverted to Porto

When a pilot or passenger suffers a serious medical issue mid-flight, airlines usually divert to the nearest suitable airport where emergency services can meet the aircraft. In this case, Porto became the safest option for the flight to land quickly while allowing medics to reach the affected pilot.

Commercial flights are designed with backup procedures for cockpit emergencies. Passenger aircraft are operated by trained flight crew, and if one pilot becomes incapacitated, another qualified pilot can continue managing the aircraft while the airline coordinates a diversion and medical response.

That safety structure does not remove the fear passengers may feel during a sudden descent or emergency landing, especially when cabin crew are visibly searching for medical assistance. But the safe landing in Porto shows how emergency protocols are meant to work when a flight crew member becomes unwell.

After the landing, Jet2 reportedly arranged for another pilot to travel from Manchester to Porto so the passengers could continue their journey to Birmingham. The disruption caused a delay, but the flight was eventually able to resume with replacement crew.

The incident has drawn attention because pilot medical emergencies are rare and often alarming for passengers. It also comes amid wider public interest in aviation safety events, including a recent Southwest Airlines emergency landing after a windshield cracked at 37,000 feet.

For the passengers on LS1266, the journey from Tenerife to Birmingham became an unexpected overnight ordeal involving flashing cabin lights, frightened families, emergency responders and a long delay in Portugal. Jet2 has not released any further update on the pilot’s condition.
