Kmart NZ Recalls Anko Gel Packs Over Serious Toxicity Concerns

Kmart has issued a recall for two popular gel pack products sold in New Zealand for more than seven years, warning they may pose a serious health risk if damaged and ingested.

The retailer confirmed on Friday that it is recalling the Anko Small Gel Pak and Anko Large Gel Pak, which have been sold in stores and online since June 2018.

According to Kmart, testing found the gel inside the packs may contain ethylene glycol, a toxic substance, instead of the intended non-toxic ingredient glycerol. Ethylene glycol is dangerous if swallowed and can lead to irreversible injury or even death, particularly in children.

What customers need to know

  • The recall applies to all Anko Small Gel Pak and Anko Large Gel Pak products sold since June 2018.
  • The small gel pack remained on sale until December 24, 2025, while the large gel pack was last available until December 21, 2025.
  • If the packaging becomes damaged and the gel leaks out, ingestion poses a serious risk.

Kmart is urging customers to stop using the gel packs immediately and ensure they are kept out of reach of children.

Refund details

Customers can return either product to any Kmart store for a full refund, even if they no longer have a receipt.

The recall is being overseen by Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, which is responsible for product safety and consumer recalls in New Zealand.

Anyone who believes they may have been exposed to the substance is advised to seek medical attention promptly.
