London rail passengers are facing widespread disruption today as extreme heat forces train operators to cancel services, reduce timetables and slow trains across busy routes in and out of the capital.
With temperatures expected to reach up to 38C, National Rail has advised passengers to travel only if absolutely necessary. Network Rail has introduced speed restrictions to reduce the risk of heat-related problems, including buckled rails and sagging overhead electric wires.
Why London trains are disrupted in extreme heat
Railways can become more vulnerable during very hot weather. Steel tracks expand as temperatures rise, while overhead electric wires can sag after prolonged heat exposure.
To keep services safe, trains often have to run at lower speeds. That reduces the number of trains the network can handle, leading to cancellations, longer journeys and busier carriages.

Ticket flexibility and refund advice
Many operators are allowing passengers to use Friday tickets on later dates, with several easements valid until Tuesday, June 30. This gives travellers the option to delay non-essential journeys rather than travel during the hottest and most disrupted period.
Refunds are also available on some services for passengers who decide not to travel. Conditions vary by train company and ticket type, so customers should check the rules with the operator or retailer they booked through.
What passengers should do before travelling
Anyone who still needs to travel should check live train updates shortly before leaving, carry water, avoid the hottest part of the day where possible and allow extra time. Trains that continue running may be busier than usual because of reduced timetables.
The rail disruption reflects the wider impact of the current heatwave across England. Alongside transport delays, hospitals have also been forced to adjust services because of the extreme conditions. Our coverage of England hospitals cancelling operations during the heatwave explains how the NHS is responding.
For official live updates, passengers should check the National Rail website before starting their journey.
