Train passengers travelling between Manchester and Liverpool faced a difficult start to the day as a technical fault disrupted multiple rail services during the busy morning commute.
The issue, reported shortly before 8am on April 14, has been traced to a points failure between Hunts Cross and Edge Hill stations in Liverpool â a key stretch connecting major routes in the region.
As a result, several lines have been affected, including services running between Norwich and Liverpool Lime Street, Cleethorpes and Liverpool, and commuter routes linking Manchester Oxford Road, Warrington Central, and Liverpool.
Widespread disruption across major routes
Passengers have been warned to expect delays, cancellations, and diversions across affected services, with operators working to manage the disruption.
Rail teams were deployed to the site early in the morning, but services were expected to remain impacted until at least 10am, affecting thousands of commuters heading into work or connecting across the North West.
Travel operators, including Northern and TransPennine Express, have introduced temporary measures to ease passenger movement during the disruption.
Alternative travel arrangements in place
To help stranded passengers, ticket restrictions have been lifted in the affected zones, allowing travellers to use alternative services without additional cost.
Passengers have been advised they can travel on replacement bus services running between Liverpool Lime Street and Warrington Central, as well as use Metrolink connections between Manchester Victoria and Piccadilly.
Additionally, rail tickets are being accepted on selected services to help maintain connectivity between key stations.
Further travel updates and real-time service information can be checked via the official National Rail website, which continues to provide live updates for affected routes.
While engineers work to resolve the issue, disruption highlights the continued vulnerability of busy commuter corridors to technical faults, particularly during peak travel hours.
