A teenager was rushed to hospital in critical condition Friday after an avalanche swept up two skiers near the Nakiska Ski Area in Kananaskis Country, roughly 100 kilometres west of Calgary.
Emergency call reported two skiers trapped
RCMP said they received a call at about 12:49 p.m. reporting that two skiers were caught in an avalanche at the Nakiska area. Officials indicated the slide occurred in-bounds at the ski area, prompting a rapid, multi-agency response that included search and rescue personnel and emergency medical crews.
One skier escaped; teen located unresponsive
Police said one of the skiers was able to get out on their own and was later confirmed by EMS to be uninjured. The second skier, identified as a youth, was found unresponsive during the rescue effort.
Teen transported to Alberta Children’s Hospital
EMS said the youth was transported by ground ambulance to Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary in life-threatening (critical) condition.
Nakiska statement and investigation
A spokesperson for Nakiska Ski Area said the resort’s thoughts are with the teen’s family and friends, adding that a full investigation is underway and further details will be shared when available.
Avalanche danger elevated amid stormy conditions
Conditions in the region have been volatile, with wind and fresh snowfall contributing to heightened avalanche risk. Avalanche safety officials have warned that strong winds and new snow can rapidly destabilize slopes, increasing the chance of dangerous slides.
Seasonal toll in western Canada
The incident comes during a season that has already seen multiple avalanche fatalities across western Canada, underscoring how quickly risk can rise during periods of active winter weather.
