KATHMANDU — A preliminary magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Nepal on Tuesday night, with shaking reported in Kathmandu as authorities watched for damage and possible aftershocks. The quake comes at a particularly difficult time for Nepal, where emergency teams are already engaged in a major recovery operation following devastating August floods.
India’s National Center for Seismology (NCS) recorded the earthquake at 9:38:39 p.m. IST on September 8. Its automatic solution placed the epicenter about 200 kilometers northwest of Kathmandu, at a preliminary depth of 167.6 kilometers.
No earthquake-related deaths, serious injuries or widespread structural damage were confirmed in the first reports. Assessments from communities closer to the epicenter could take longer.

Nepal earthquake magnitude could still change
Early reports described the earthquake as magnitude 5.0, while the latest automatic NCS listing available Tuesday night showed magnitude 5.6.
The National Center for Seismology earthquake catalogue currently labels the event “Unscrutinized.” That distinction matters: the magnitude, depth and exact location are preliminary and can be revised after seismologists review additional station data.
Readers may therefore continue to see different magnitude figures in early reports until an official reviewed solution is available.
Where was the earthquake epicenter?
The preliminary coordinates are 29.0865°N, 83.9893°E, northwest of the Kathmandu Valley. NCS estimates the earthquake originated approximately 167.6 kilometers below the surface.
That is relatively deep for an earthquake. Deeper events can sometimes be felt across a wide area because their seismic waves travel considerable distances. Depth does not by itself determine damage, however; local geology, building construction and distance from the source are also important.
Kathmandu feels the nighttime tremors
Shaking was reported in Kathmandu and surrounding areas after the earthquake. Noticeable tremors can cause particular concern in Nepal because the country lies along the collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
The continuing movement of those plates created the Himalayas and makes Nepal one of South Asia’s seismically active regions.
Recent seismic events elsewhere illustrate how earthquake impacts can vary substantially. A magnitude 6.2 earthquake near Nikolski, Alaska was recently recorded, where depth, location and proximity to populated communities were also important in evaluating the threat.
Damage and casualties remain under assessment
There were no immediate confirmed reports of deaths or widespread serious damage caused by Tuesday’s Nepal earthquake.
That does not mean assessments are complete. Information from remote Himalayan communities can take time to reach authorities, particularly at night. Buildings, roads, bridges, utilities and communications infrastructure may require inspection after noticeable shaking.
Aftershocks are also possible following an earthquake, although scientists cannot predict their exact timing or strength.

Several smaller earthquakes recently hit Nepal
NCS recorded other earthquakes in Nepal in the days before Tuesday’s event, including a magnitude 3.8 quake about 82 kilometers east of Kathmandu on September 6 and another magnitude 3.2 earthquake later that day.
A magnitude 3.4 event was also recorded northwest of Kathmandu on September 4. These earthquakes demonstrate continuing seismic activity but do not prove that another larger earthquake is coming.
Similar clusters of noticeable seismic activity have recently occurred elsewhere, including a series of earthquakes near Milford Sound in New Zealand.
Earthquake hits during Nepal’s flood recovery
Tuesday’s earthquake comes as Nepal is still responding to catastrophic August 26 Bhote Koshi River flooding.
Nepal government figures released September 8 said 1,357 bodies had been recovered, around 5,300 people remained missing and 13,583 people had been rescued. Flooding also damaged homes, roads, bridges, telecommunications networks and hydropower infrastructure.
The overlap matters because emergency resources are already supporting searches, displaced communities and infrastructure repairs. Roads, bridges or buildings previously weakened by flooding may also need additional checks following the earthquake.
What residents should watch now
Residents should follow updates from Nepalese authorities and avoid buildings showing serious new cracks, falling masonry or other visible structural damage. During additional shaking, standard earthquake safety advice is to drop, cover and hold on.
The next key updates will be any revised NCS magnitude, reports from communities closer to the epicenter, confirmed structural damage and significant aftershock activity. Until expert review is completed, the 5.6 magnitude and 167.6-kilometer depth should be treated as preliminary.
